Littleton Library Board Considers Room Use Policy, Reviews Budget, and Prepares for Community Events
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting focused on policy considerations, budget discussions, and community engagement, the Littleton Library Board of Trustees deliberated on changes to room use policy due to concerns raised by a dance group, reviewed financial standings, and planned upcoming programs to enhance community interaction.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the discussion about the library’s rights regarding meeting room usage. A dance group had previously been denied access to a room, leading to consultations with the town council. The council confirmed that the library could refuse room access. The board decided against a permanent ban, preferring to reassess the situation in a few months. This situation prompted consideration of amendments to the meeting room policy, with plans to consult further with a colleague to discuss possible updates. Communication with the dance group had been established, and the group expressed regret over the incident, which would be re-evaluated in future meetings.
Budget considerations were another focal point of the meeting. The library director presented a detailed financial report, highlighting various funding sources and the financial health of the institution. The MMDT balance was at $43,485, with other funds, including the gift fund, state aid, and the MBLC gift fund, contributing to a stable financial outlook. A discussion on the recent budget meeting with the Finance Committee (FINCOM) and the select board revealed that despite a $9,000 increase in payroll due to cost-of-living adjustments, the budget remained under by approximately 0.79%. The director expressed confidence in managing these adjustments and planned to address the FINCOM and select board again on January 21st.
The board also explored the handling of books not kept by patrons, considering options such as recycling, placing them in the book sale room, or managing them behind the circulation desk. Visibility and accessibility for patrons were emphasized, with suggestions to create a display that encourages borrowing and recycling.
Community engagement initiatives took a prominent place in the meeting. The director outlined plans for the community reads program, which will feature several events starting March 2nd. These include talks on vegetable gardening and arts and crafts sessions, aimed at adults. The necessary books for the program, including both adult and teen versions of “Braiding Sweetgrass,” were already procured and ready for distribution on a first-come, first-served basis. This initiative aligns with the library’s goal to foster community involvement and learning.
Additionally, updates on other events and initiatives were shared. The Ray Grande scholarship committee is set to meet on January 20th, with preparations underway for a town meeting presentation. Marketing strategies for library events were touched upon, though no definitive plans were established at this time. The board also discussed the winter reading program, sharing personal experiences and encouraging further participation.
The meeting concluded with logistical considerations, including adjustments to the next meeting date, and ended with a motion to adjourn.
