- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Littleton Library Board of Trustees focused on addressing staffing needs, planning for future community events, and considering updates to library policies and infrastructure. The board emphasized the necessity of additional staffing and the organization of upcoming activities.
One of the primary topics of discussion was the library’s budget and staffing requirements. A senior librarian highlighted the need for additional positions, specifically an Adult Services librarian and expanded hours for an existing children’s librarian role. This was prompted by increased demand for adult programming and significant attendance in the teen room. The finance team had not yet approved these requests, but there was optimism about their receptiveness. Board members prepared to support these staffing requests in upcoming meetings with the finance committee.
The topic of staffing was further underscored by a recent unexpected resignation, adding urgency to fill open positions. A candidate had been selected for a library assistant role, with interviews planned for another vacancy. The board noted that a level-funded budget had been submitted, including standard staff increases and a request for more book funding based on state aid requirements.
The meeting also covered plans for community engagement, with the Friends of the Library announcing the addition of new members and successful outcomes from a recent book sale. The book sale raised nearly $3,500, a significant increase from the previous year. To further boost community involvement, the Friends group planned a holiday-themed decoration project and participation in a local bazaar, alongside organizing a mini golf event with local sponsors. The relocation of a storage trailer for book sale items was pending the completion of a senior center.
The board also addressed library infrastructure, particularly concerning the sliding doors in the Sears room, which were malfunctioning and posed safety concerns. The malfunction was attributed to plastic wheels unable to support the door’s weight. The consensus leaned towards removing the doors to ensure safety, with plans to store them for potential future replacement. Additionally, there were updates on reorganization efforts within the library, such as moving the biography section and plans to standardize the audiobook CDs.
In policy matters, the board approved a minor update to the Patron Code of Conduct, addressing eating and drinking restrictions at library computers. This change aimed to accommodate the increasing number of patrons using library spaces for work. The board also discussed aligning holiday closure times with the town hall, deciding to close at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve unless the town opted for a full-day closure.
The board expressed interest in future initiatives, including a board retreat to revise the Strategic Plan and update the library’s mission statement. Discussions included strategies to increase public interest in trustee roles and identify desired skill sets for potential new members. The retreat was tentatively scheduled for early next year, with plans to engage a consultant for strategic planning.
A notable conversation revolved around the allocation of recently received funds totaling $6,890. The board considered using these funds for green technologies or debt reduction, acknowledging guidelines that restricted spending. While the installation of solar panels was discussed as a potential project, previous cost estimates suggested it might not be feasible within existing funds. The board recognized the need for community-wide participation to enhance the library’s sustainability and expressed interest in researching successful green initiatives from other libraries.
