Littleton School Committee Reassures Public on School Project Landscaping Plans
- Meeting Overview:
The Littleton School Committee meeting focused on various updates concerning the ongoing school building project, particularly addressing public concerns about landscaping plans, site investigations, and the integration of community feedback into the design process. The meeting also discussed the financial status of the project and the introduction of a new superintendent.
A key point of the meeting was the public comment from Yolanda Davis, a local resident, who addressed the committee with concerns about the landscaping buffer between her property and the proposed new school. She expressed alarm that the proposed six trees would be insufficient for privacy. The committee responded by acknowledging the ongoing nature of the project and reassured Davis that they were committed to maintaining open communication to ensure an appropriate buffer is established. They emphasized that the planning was not finalized and changes had occurred since previous commitments.
The discussion then shifted to the project schedule and budget updates. The design development phase was nearing completion, with an expected submission around mid-June. Following this, cost reconciliation and document submission to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) were anticipated by mid-July. The project was reported to remain on budget, with $2 million worth of invoices approved, $12 million committed, and $9 million remaining in the budget.
Attention was drawn to the completion of field work, which restored the fields to a playable state. However, further investigations concerning the bedrock in the area were planned, with a seismic refraction survey proposed to map the bedrock’s top surface. This survey is important for determining the appropriate depth for horizontal connections between geothermal wells. Urban fill discovered near the baseball field prompted additional testing to assess the material’s volume and disposal requirements. A proposal for this testing was under review, with plans to forward it to the financial subcommittee for approval.
The committee also highlighted a recent meeting attended by approximately 28 individuals from various town departments and abutters. Updates on the project, including the site plan, traffic flow, emergency access, and new playing fields, were provided, with minimal comments or concerns raised. These updates are intended to continue periodically, with regular monthly meetings scheduled.
Discussions about the playing fields included concerns about supervision of children at the playground and playing fields. Consideration was given to preserving the existing playground equipment during construction, with alternative plans for a natural play area if necessary. The landscape architect focused on enhancing the playground area, including the possibility of incorporating an emergency access loop within the playground fence to increase play space.
The meeting also noted the introduction of a new team member, Chris Trembley, who shared his background in public school projects. Coordination meetings were noted to happen weekly to address ongoing issues related to the project.
One of the administrative highlights of the meeting was the announcement of Superintendent Dr. Kelly R. Clenchy’s retirement at the end of June, with Mike Cyra set to take over. The transition was viewed positively, with anticipation for the new superintendent’s involvement in the ongoing project. The committee also considered the election of a new vice chair, with Sean Hearn nominated and unanimously supported by members present.
Financial matters included the submission of four project invoices for approval, covering architectural services and landscaping work. Each invoice was reviewed and subsequently accepted after a thorough discussion. An update on cash flow estimates was also mentioned.
The meeting concluded with a brief discussion about the project’s design development progress, emphasizing the use of community feedback to enhance the building’s design. The video, along with an updated site plan, was scheduled to be sent to TTH to update the project website.
