Local Students Honored and Community Events Take Center Stage at Little Falls Town Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Little Falls Town Council meeting on May 19, 2025, was marked by a blend of student honors, community event announcements, and a series of proclamations recognizing local achievements and service. Among the key highlights were the recognition of two outstanding high school students, the announcement of upcoming community events such as the annual concert in the park and Memorial Day parade, and the approval of new library board appointments.
02:04The meeting commenced with Mayor James Damiano presenting proclamations to two distinguished students from Passaic Valley High School. Willamina Youngberg, the salutatorian, and Maria Richards, the valedictorian, were celebrated for their academic excellence and community involvement. Youngberg was noted for her leadership in the National Math Honor Society and the Art Honor Society, as well as her contributions to athletics and community service. She plans to continue her education at the College of New Jersey, pursuing a degree in nursing. Richards, who has been accepted to Princeton University to study chemistry, was recognized for her leadership in various school clubs and commitment to community service, including mentoring programs and food drives. Mayor Damiano expressed pride in the students’ achievements.
16:48In a display of community spirit, the meeting also set the stage for two major upcoming events: the annual concert in the park and the Memorial Day parade. The concert, now in its sixth year, is scheduled for Friday night and promises entertainment from two bands and a variety of food options from three food trucks. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are set to participate by selling hot dogs, water, and Girl Scout cookies. Additionally, the Clifton Health Department and the police department will be present to engage with the community. The event is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. and continue until around 9:00 p.m.
Following the concert, the annual Memorial Day parade will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Flyers have been distributed town-wide, and digital reminders have been set up by the police department to ensure community awareness. The parade will feature a diverse lineup, including military members, police, fire departments, and various local organizations. Music will accompany the parade, which culminates in annual services conducted by the American Legion Post 108 to honor fallen service members, followed by community barbecues hosted by the American Legion and U Mason.
In other council business, the meeting saw the approval of Alexis Ama’s appointment to the library board for a five-year term. Council members extended congratulations to the graduates and newly appointed board member, emphasizing the importance of community achievements.
19:11Moreover, the council addressed various community-focused initiatives, including a “Read with Daisy” event at the library featuring a certified therapy dog, designed to encourage reading among children. The library also announced a new social media series on historical New Jersey landmarks and a bounce house event for children. These initiatives aim to promote literacy and historical awareness among residents.
23:11Public safety and health were also topics of discussion. An update on the “You Text, You Drive, You Pay” grant revealed that 92 hours of enforcement led to 180 traffic stops. Patrolman Matt Yunuzi was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his efforts in DWI enforcement, receiving this honor for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the Clifton Health Department announced a mocktail paint and sip event to educate community members about sun safety, alongside a “Spring into Wellness” presentation focusing on holistic approaches to wellness.
30:11During the public comments segment, a resident shared a success story about the replacement of unsafe railings at the Little Falls post office, achieved after persistent advocacy. This improvement, facilitated with support from local officials and Congresswoman Mikey Cheryl’s office, highlights the effectiveness of community-driven initiatives in addressing public safety concerns.
25:38The meeting concluded with procedural motions addressing public comments, the consent agenda, and the introduction of ordinances related to township code and budgeting matters. These discussions were largely procedural, moving seamlessly without debate or contention.
