Local Teacher Honored with Prestigious Milken Educator Award at Lawrence School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Lawrence School Board meeting, held at Lawrence Middle School, the prestigious Milken Educator Award was presented to Janette Caprit.
The announcement of Caprit as this year’s recipient was met with enthusiastic applause and cheers from the audience, which included students, staff, and distinguished guests. This moment of celebration was the culmination of a lively event that underscored the importance of recognizing and honoring educators who make a difference in the lives of their students. Caprit, visibly moved by the recognition, recalled her early aspirations to become a teacher, a dream she has pursued since the age of three.
The event was further enriched by the presence of previous Milken Award recipients, who were introduced as an “All-Star team,” adding a sense of legacy and community among educators. The commissioner of education highlighted the significance of teachers like Caprit, who play a role in shaping the futures of their students. The acknowledgment of such educators serves as a reminder of the profound impact they have within the educational system.
In addition to the award presentation, the meeting featured a lively introduction by Principal Malowski, who engaged the audience with a select jazz ensemble performance and a series of clapping prompts. This set an energetic tone for the assembly, which included the participation of state legislators and representatives from various educational associations. Among the distinguished guests were Senator Turner, Assemblywoman Berina Reynolds Jackson, and Assemblyman Anthony Varrelli, who were acknowledged by Superintendent Dr. Robyn A. Klim.
Commissioner of Education Kevin Damer, who was welcomed to the assembly, addressed the importance of responsible social media use among students. He emphasized the need for students to “think before you post” and discussed the school’s “away for the day” policy regarding phones, which aims to enhance focus and mental health.
The event continued with a speech from Dr. Jane Foley of the Milken Family Foundation, who traveled from California to recognize the achievements of Lawrence Middle School educators. Dr. Foley underscored the critical role of teachers in shaping students’ futures and called for greater recognition of educators’ contributions. Her remarks set the stage for the announcement of the Milken Educator Award, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation and excitement.
The session concluded with acknowledgments of the support from state officials and the significance of the Milken Award in representing educational excellence both locally and nationally.
