- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Long Branch City Council discussed a range of issues from tree preservation initiatives to concerns about local development projects. The meeting was marked by a public hearing on an ordinance regarding the extension of Broadway, discussions on environmental sustainability, and community engagement on local development plans.
During the meeting, attention was given to an ordinance concerning the Broadway extension project. A public hearing revealed community concerns regarding transparency and the allocation of funds for the project. Questions were raised about the appropriateness of professional fees and the potential impact on local taxpayers. This issue was further compounded by grievances related to the sale of a church lot and subsequent plans for the development of luxury townhouses, which have faced objections from the community. The council moved forward with the list of resolutions, excluding one that was removed, and acknowledged the public’s input.
The environmental sustainability of Long Branch was another focal point. The Green Team and Environmental Commission presented their accomplishments, notably the completion of a tree inventory and a canopy study. They advocated for the inclusion of a tree preservation plan in the Planning and Zoning development checklist and the adoption of a bike and pedestrian plan in the master plan. High-visibility crosswalks and a tree planting and maintenance program were proposed in response to a 10% decrease in the city’s tree canopy over the past decade. Council members engaged in a dialogue to understand the implications and costs, with some expressing concerns over the impact on homeowners and the practicality of certain initiatives.
Further discussions on environmental issues revolved around the city’s tree maintenance and planting programs. The possibility of partnering with the community or nearby towns for a maintenance program was considered, along with the budgetary aspects and the importance of focusing on underserved areas. The potential for homeowner involvement in tree maintenance was weighed against sidewalk damage concerns due to tree roots. Additionally, the proposal for a rain garden on Red Oaks Drive was brought up as a solution for stormwater management.
Moreover, an update was provided on a recent collaboration with Mammoth ax aimed at addressing social issues in the community.
The meeting also included presentations on cultural and community events, with a highlight on Greek American Heritage Month. An English teacher and a student from Long Branch High School presented a proclamation and read a poem by a Greek poet. Gratitude was expressed for the student’s participation and the contributions of those in attendance.
