- Meeting Overview:
The Long Branch City Council meeting highlighted the contributions of Arab Americans by declaring April as Arab American Heritage Month. A proclamation was read by Adam ABD Wahad, a sophomore at Long Branch High School, recognizing the myriad contributions of Arab Americans to various sectors in American society, including science, medicine, education, business, culture, and government. The proclamation also acknowledged the leadership roles Arab Americans have played in government and their efforts in fostering strong families and communities.
The council meeting featured Marcus Rodriguez from the Long Branch Public Schools’ Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who introduced student Adam ABD Wahad. Adam’s reading of the proclamation was met with positive response from the attendees. The proclamation underscored the importance of Arab American contributions and aimed to foster a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage within the community.
Additionally, members of the public took the opportunity to address the council during the public portion of the meeting. One resident, Vincent Lor, expressed concerns about financial issues relating to a local development project and a recent state assembly vote. He questioned the transparency and accuracy of an audit report on a tax abatement deal and its implications for the city’s finances.
Another resident, Robert Gerardi, shared his experiences regarding discrepancies he observed at a planning board meeting. He expressed a desire for clearer communication and a more professional environment during such meetings.
Daryl SPS also spoke to introduce himself to the council and the community. He mentioned his recent appointments to the zoning board and the Green Team, expressing enthusiasm for contributing to the city’s welfare.
The council addressed routine business matters, including the approval of previous meeting minutes and the list of resolutions. No changes were made to the resolutions list, which the council passed as a consent agenda.
In other business, council members took a moment to extend condolences to their colleague, Bill Dangler, for the loss of his mother. They also shared information about upcoming community events, such as the Long Branch Fire History Museum’s open house, the Youth Internship Program, and the Long Branch Disability Resource Fair.
