- Meeting Overview:
The Long Branch City Council meeting on July 24, 2024, was notably marked by discussions on public safety enhancements, financial oversight on urban renewal projects, and the celebration of Disability Pride Month. The council addressed a variety of community concerns, from the need for increased public safety measures to the maintenance of the city’s beachfront and medians, and also provided updates on community initiatives including the opening of a new Senior Center and historical preservation plans.
Public safety emerged as a primary concern, with discussions centered on the need for heightened safety measures in the community. The council acknowledged issues related to traffic and noise disturbances and the importance of police presence in mitigating potential safety risks. Specific attention was given to the Ocean Avenue linear park, where unauthorized vehicle and motorcycle access and the absence of designated walking and biking lanes were identified as significant safety concerns for pedestrians and pets. The council committed to taking actions to enhance safety measures.
Financial oversight regarding urban renewal entities also received considerable attention. A member of the public, Vincent Laora, criticized the council’s handling of financial agreements with entities responsible for the redevelopment of Block 222, including Pier Village 3. Laora highlighted concerns about the accuracy of annual service charges paid under pilot tax abatements and criticized the council for not thoroughly analyzing these charges. He accused the council of lacking diligence and respect for the matter, and pointed to issues with the city’s professional staff and the audit report concerning the financial dealings with the urban renewal entities.
In addition to these concerns, another resident, Harry Delane, commended the city’s public safety and Public Works departments for their maintenance of the beach and boardwalk, but pointed out the neglected state of the medians on Ocean Boulevard and Cedar Avenue. Delane contrasted the neglected medians with those near Pier Village, urging the council to ensure that maintenance standards are consistent throughout the city.
The council also addressed community celebrations and initiatives. During the public comments portion of the meeting, appreciation was expressed for a presentation by a local organization on Disability Pride Month. The efforts to install signs prohibiting walking on the dunes were acknowledged. Updates were shared on the opening of a new Senior Center and an art exhibit at the Long Branch Art Center. Moreover, an improvement plan for the El Bron section of the city was discussed, which included federal funding for historical preservation projects.
As the meeting drew to a close, the council moved to pass resolutions, which were approved unanimously. The public participation portion was closed, and council members took the opportunity to express gratitude to the attendees and encourage the community to enjoy the summer safely. Further announcements included details on upcoming events and initiatives, highlighting the council’s continued focus on enhancing the quality of life for Long Branch residents.
