Long Branch Council Faces Criticism Over Fire Department’s Ladder Truck Deal
- Meeting Overview:
A recent Long Branch City Council meeting became a platform for public criticism against the city’s handling of a failed ladder truck deal with West Long Branch. During the public participation segment, Vincent Leapour addressed the council, criticizing Mr. Shirley’s comments about the “social media trolls” who criticized the deal. Leapour defended the residents’ concerns, especially those of West Long Branch and Long Branch firefighters, and highlighted past incidents within the Long Branch Fire Department as reasons for public skepticism. He questioned the city’s capability to maintain the West Long Branch ladder truck, citing historical issues with Long Branch’s own fire trucks.
In response to this public critique, there was a notable emphasis on the need for improved communication from the city, as voiced by Harry Delane. Delane proposed that the city should adopt better strategies for disseminating factual information to counter public criticism and misinformation on social media platforms. His comments suggested a gap in the city’s current communication efforts, highlighting an opportunity for the administration to engage more effectively with the community.
Additionally, the council introduced two ordinances on first reading. The first ordinance involves a bond ordinance for 2025 capital acquisitions and improvements, appropriating a total of $1,870,000, including a $750,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. This funding will support roadway reconstructions, IT server equipment purchases, and the replacement of traffic lights at various city intersections. The second ordinance authorizes the sale of city property for a New Jersey Department of Transportation project involving the Route 36 bridge over Troutman’s Creek.
Council members also expressed condolences for the passing of Jimmy Simonelli, a respected community member known for his contributions as an educator, coach, and member of Long Branch Ocean Rescue. Recognitions during the meeting included appreciation for first responders involved in a recent after-hours rescue and acknowledgment of successful local events such as the “Surfing for Vision” program.
