- Meeting Overview:
The Long Hill Town Council, in its recent meeting, approved a long-term tax exemption for a property on Valley Road Urban Renewal LLC and celebrated the community service achievements of Sophia Squado, a local Girl Scout who earned the Gold Award.
The approval of ordinance 539-2446 marked a decision by the council, authorizing a financial agreement that grants a tax exemption to a property in Long Hill. This ordinance was the center of a discussion among council members who scrutinized the implications of the tax exemption for the property and the broader community. The property, which is part of an urban renewal project, is anticipated to benefit from the long-term tax exemption, a move that council members hope will spur economic growth and development within the area.
The council members also took the opportunity to honor a young local hero, Sophia Squado, for her outstanding service to pediatric cancer patients. Squado organized a 3K event and collected care packages for children in hospitals across Ohio, Nevada, Iowa, and Washington, D.C. Her efforts culminated in her earning the Gold Award, the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts. The council presented her with a proclamation, acknowledging her exceptional dedication and impact on the lives of many children and their families.
In other matters, the council approved the consent agenda resolutions, a list of which was not provided. The council then delivered various liaison reports, touching on community programs, public safety, health, and environmental initiatives.
The recreation liaison reported on a series of community events, including Red Cross classes, summer camps, and the annual spring Sterling Lake dance, along with the Memorial Day parade.
The beautification liaison highlighted several accomplishments and upcoming initiatives, such as the installation of electrical wraps, the success of rain barrel and compost sales, and efforts to enhance the aesthetic of Turtle Back Park. These projects are part of a concerted effort to improve the visual appeal and environmental health of the community.
Progress in the development of recreational facilities was also reported by the open space liaison. The liaison noted discussions with the Township engineer regarding the types of parks and ball fields suitable for the community. The liaison expressed enthusiasm for the developments, mentioning the involvement of Tom Jones, the new chair of the open space committee, who has been contributing to these efforts.
The First Aid Squad gave an update, aligning their support with National Nurses Week, and reported several calls attended to in April. This update underscores the critical role of the First Aid Squad in maintaining public health and safety.
The Board of Health announced a forthcoming skin cancer screening event.
The Police Department’s ongoing accreditation assessment was mentioned, with the Mayor expressing optimism about the process, highlighting the council’s focus on maintaining a high standard of public safety services.
As the meeting drew to a close, the Administrator noted that the finalization of the budget was in progress and would be presented at the subsequent council meeting. During the public comment period, residents voiced concerns about the budget increase, the surplus from the sewer sale, and the behavior of the Township Committee. The Mayor addressed these concerns, defending the budget increase and the sewer sale, and stating that slanderous remarks would not be tolerated.
