Long Hill School Board Celebrates New Literacy Program and Adjusts Resolutions
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Long Hill School Board meeting, a new literacy initiative at Gillette and Millington schools garnered attention. The program, supported by the Ed Foundation, aims to boost students’ enthusiasm for reading by introducing reading buddies and incentive systems for younger students. The board also addressed various resolutions, including the decision to remove and revisit a specific resolution related to donor categorization in a future meeting.
The new literacy program, which has started at both Gillette and Millington schools, was highlighted as a promising endeavor to encourage reading among students. The initiative allows younger students to receive a reading buddy, a stuffed animal companion to read with, while older students can earn tokens for their reading efforts. The program has already sparked excitement, with students expressing newfound eagerness to tackle reading assignments, including ambitious goals like reading the entire Harry Potter series.
The meeting also involved procedural adjustments, notably the removal of resolution number nine from consideration. This resolution, initially miscategorized under the wrong donor, is set to be addressed in a future session to ensure proper categorization. The board members moved forward with other resolutions related to financials, special services, personnel, and policy updates. Each of these items passed without significant opposition.
