Long Hill School Board Discusses New AI Policy and Budget Adjustments
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Long Hill School Board meeting, discussions included the introduction of an artificial intelligence policy, budgetary updates, and facilities improvements. The board also addressed parking lot concerns raised by the senior center and discussed upcoming changes in school transportation routes.
A point of discussion was the proposed artificial intelligence policy, which, although non-mandatory, was recommended by the policy committee following an alert from the New Jersey School Boards Association for April 2025. The administration reviewed and edited the policy’s optional language, and it was added to the agenda for its first reading. Additionally, a previously adjusted policy regarding language errors was also revisited for a second reading with corrections.
Budgetary concerns were addressed, particularly regarding the approval of extraordinary aid for the 2024-2025 period, which was reduced to $391,290 compared to the previous year’s $469,000. The state funded only 51.6% of the requested amount, a decrease from last year’s 61.8%. Non-public transportation aid saw a slight increase, and the district submitted a grant application for a new water bottle filling station. Financial updates also included a minor profit from the food service program after covering lunch aid salaries and new equipment leases.
Facility updates included progress on the CMS media center, which is expected to be operational by Thanksgiving, despite some delays. The installation of unit ventilators at Gillette and Millington schools is underway, with further work planned for Central later in the year to ensure thoroughness.
The board also reviewed transportation changes, noting a 3% increase in the transportation agreement with Durham. Adjustments were necessary due to route consolidations by Watching Hills, impacting Long Hill’s budget. Efforts to reroute and optimize transportation are ongoing, with emphasis on minimizing disruptions for families.
