Long Hill School Board Spotlights Innovative STEAM Program and Appoints New Board Member
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting held on March 17, 2025, the Long Hill School Board celebrated New Jersey’s STEM Month with a detailed presentation on the district’s STEAM program, addressed the appointment of a new board member, and outlined budget and strategic planning initiatives. The board also discussed various logistical and financial matters, including an increase in facilities fees and the introduction of breakfast services due to a rise in students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.
The STEAM program, mandatory for seventh and eighth graders, spans one marking period each year and focuses on developing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The program’s current projects include physical computing skills, basic computer programming, 3D printing, and engineering challenges centered on wind turbines and artificial intelligence.
During a subsequent question-and-answer session, the STEAM teacher confirmed that while the curriculum maintains consistent core elements, adjustments are made based on student performance and understanding. The program emphasizes sustainability with mostly reusable kits.
In personnel matters, the board interviewed several candidates for a vacant Board of Education seat, ultimately appointing Alexander D. Jamus, an attorney with experience in school law. Jamus expressed a strong commitment to community engagement and policy oversight, emphasizing the board’s role as stewards of public resources. Other candidates included professionals from diverse backgrounds, each highlighting their readiness to serve and contribute to the board’s mission.
The meeting also covered various financial and logistical topics. A $6,000 grant was secured for breakfast service carts to support students eligible for free and reduced lunch, although the presentation on this initiative was not yet available online. The board discussed the tentative budget for the Zabona sports camp, proposing a 2% increase in facility use fees, and agreed to reallocate leftover funds to support music instruments for students in need.
A new cooperative was established in Bergen County, expanding the district’s list of acceptable vendors. Discussions also included the disposition of outdated library books, with shipping costs to California deemed prohibitive. Security enhancements were proposed for Central Middle School, including updated locks and a perimeter fence, while Gillette School considered adding security cameras and a key card reader.
In the technology sector, the committee outlined plans to upgrade to Windows 11 and replace wireless access points by late June. The district’s 1:1 initiative remains on track for full implementation by 2026, with a cloud-based financial management system transition noted for enhanced security.
The meeting also addressed strategic planning, with the Superintendent emphasizing broad community participation in upcoming sessions. The proposed budget aligns with district goals, prioritizing student learning, professional development, and future facilities. Key investments include resources for the STEAM program, instructional tools, and a new math curriculum. Renovations are planned for the Central Middle School library, transforming it into a modern learning commons, alongside major HVAC work.
During public comments, a resident inquired about the significant allocation for debt service, highlighting concerns about rising interest rates and the potential for debt repayment. The board also discussed the appointment of Dana Carcillo as the new director of special services, effective July 1, and emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy reserves while minimizing tax burdens.
The meeting concluded with public comments and a closed session to discuss board candidate qualifications and a harassment, intimidation, and bullying report. Following the closed session, the board announced Jamus’s appointment to the vacant seat, pending a criminal history background check.
