Long Hill School Board Unveils Innovative Vocabulary Initiative and Prepares for Budget Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Long Hill School Board meeting recently highlighted an engaging new vocabulary initiative at Millington School and tackled looming financial challenges, including a significant projected increase in health insurance costs for the upcoming budget. These developments were presented amid ongoing efforts to enhance student achievement and maintain a positive school climate.
The meeting started on a dynamic note with the introduction of the “wow words” initiative, aimed at expanding students’ vocabulary in an engaging manner. Principal Dawson and Mrs. Manurva spearheaded this initiative, which seeks to replace simplistic words with more enriching vocabulary, effectively integrating these words into students’ daily lives. The initiative was demonstrated through an interactive game titled “Guess the Wow Word,” engaging board members with words like “cordial” and “indulge.” Mrs. Manurva explained that each Monday, two new words are announced over the loudspeaker, accompanied by a slide deck for teachers and a weekly drawing contest to illustrate the words. The initiative is designed to foster excitement and a robust vocabulary foundation across all subjects, with testimonials from students underscoring its positive impact.
In terms of student safety, Mrs. Backer provided an update on the Student Safety Data System (SSDS), noting zero cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) in the first reporting period, alongside seven suspensions at Central categorized under “other.” Efforts to maintain a positive school climate include school climate teams with parent representatives and monthly character education lessons and assemblies.
The board also discussed preliminary budget considerations, with a significant projected increase of approximately 25% in health insurance costs, amounting to a $900,000 impact on the budget. The business administrator assured the board that options to trim the budget would be explored, with a potential tax levy increase to maintain current programs and services being considered.
In the realm of student achievement, Mrs. Dawson reported on the implementation of a new math program at Millington, which adjusts the daily schedule for fifth graders to allow for additional math instruction. The program facilitates in-class small assessments, enabling teachers to gauge student progress and tailor instruction through the My Path program. This integration of in-class data with home learning fosters a more personalized educational experience.
Further discussions included updates on the district’s wellness initiatives, focusing on nutrition, physical activity, and compliance with wellness policies. The board also addressed an upcoming transition to new legal notice requirements due to state law changes, specifying that from March 1, 2026, notices will be published solely on the district’s website.
The meeting continued with topics related to extracurricular activities and community engagement. The board recognized commendable performances by the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and participation by middle school musicians in a regional honors band. An assembly on digital citizenship for fifth graders was also reported.
The Long Hill Education Foundation announced the upcoming registration for spring classes, set to run for six weeks starting March 17, with an upcoming fundraiser at Barcelento on February 24 and 25. This initiative exemplifies ongoing efforts to provide diverse learning opportunities and engage the community in supporting educational programs.
Amid these discussions, the board acknowledged the successful PTO talent show, which received positive feedback despite some members being unable to attend. Public comments were invited, but no responses were recorded at that point in the meeting.
The session concluded with a series of resolutions being moved and seconded with minimal debate. A motion to enter executive session was made to address a harassment, intimidation, and bullying report.
