- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Long Hill Town Council meeting, deliberations centered around proposed increases in rental fees for recreational facilities, a move prompted by rising maintenance costs and a decade-long hiatus in fee adjustments. The council also discussed holiday events, library updates, and public safety initiatives.
The most significant topic of the meeting was the proposal to raise rental fees for recreational facilities. The council discussed the need to align the fees with those of neighboring municipalities, which have already made similar adjustments. The proposed changes include a $5 increase for every two hours of pavilion use and a $5 increase for every four hours of rentals, raising the rate to $125 per hour. Field rentals are set to increase to $250 per hour. These adjustments aim to cover future maintenance and potential replacements of facilities, a concern that has grown as costs have risen over the years.
During the discussion, a council member emphasized the importance of these fees in funding the town’s recreational facilities. It was noted that, unlike many other towns, Long Hill does not require youth programs to pay for field use, which supports community engagement in sports and activities without financial barriers. This distinctive policy was upheld despite some discussions about potential changes. A member highlighted the need for an annual review of the fees and suggested implementing a phased approach for future increases to manage expectations and aid in budget planning.
The council agreed that the increases were modest, especially considering the last adjustment occurred in 2011. The Recreation Advisory Committee had previously reviewed the proposed changes. It was decided that the new rates would not take effect until March 17, allowing time for those with existing spring reservations to adjust. The importance of this decision lies in its potential impact on budget allocations and the upkeep of the township’s recreational facilities, which serve as vital community hubs.
Aside from financial matters, the council also addressed the successful conclusion of holiday-themed activities organized by the Recreation Advisory Committee. Winners of the Holiday House Business Decorating Contest were celebrated, with awards distributed across various categories.
In public safety updates, the first aid squad’s impressive response rate was noted, handling approximately 750 calls. This statistic underscores the dedication required for emergency services and the need for recruiting young volunteers, with age requirements set at 14 for Millington and for Sterling. The community was urged to support these services through participation in events like the blood drive organized by St. Vincent de Paul.
The meeting also included a library update, announcing holiday hours and upcoming programs designed to engage residents. The library will close early on December 31st and remain closed on January 1st, with a variety of activities scheduled thereafter, including storytime sessions and a family game night.
In recycling news, the council addressed the seasonal increase in Styrofoam waste and urged residents to recycle properly at designated locations. The Morris Township Utilities Authority provided tips to ensure effective recycling, including keeping items dry and ensuring timely placement for collection.
Finally, the council scheduled its reorganization meeting for January 8 at 6 PM, later than usual due to calendar conflicts. Although no public comments were made during the meeting, the council extended holiday greetings before proceeding to an executive session, adhering to procedural norms with no further public action required.
