Long Hill Township Debates Ordinance on Commercial Vehicle Parking Amid Road Improvement Plans
- Meeting Overview:
The Long Hill Township Council meeting on February 25th was marked by discussions on multiple ordinances, particularly one concerning commercial vehicle parking, alongside updates on local road improvement projects. The council addressed community concerns and outlined upcoming activities and improvements.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on a proposed amendment to an ordinance regarding commercial vehicles and overnight parking. This proposed amendment sparked debate among council members and attendees, with some expressing concerns about the potential implications for local businesses. One participant emphasized the necessity of collaborating with the zoning officer and the police chief to ensure the ordinance would not negatively impact businesses. The participant clarified, “We’re just trying to codify it so it makes sense.”
However, there was a differing opinion regarding the ordinance’s practical application. Another participant raised concerns about imposing a single standard across the town’s diverse neighborhoods. They stated, “There are so many different neighborhoods in this town and it feels as if we’re taking one view of what a neighborhood should be, superimposing it upon probably 10 different kinds of neighborhoods.” This debate highlighted the need for a more comprehensive review by the planning board before proceeding with any final decisions.
In addition to the ordinance debate, the meeting addressed significant road improvement plans, with updates on the paving of Long Hill Road. The municipal portion of the road is scheduled to be paved from Myersville to the eastern border in the spring to early summer. Morris County also confirmed plans to repave Long Hill Road from the Chatham border to Myersville. Concerns were raised regarding New Jersey American Water’s plans to dig up Myersville Road, which could potentially complicate the paving schedule.
Notably, the Parks and Recreation department announced a photography contest with the theme “birding in Long Hill,” inviting residents to submit up to three photos for free, with winners to be announced on March 31st. Other activities included a safety class for sports coaches, a virtual bingo night with a St. Patrick’s Day theme, a volleyball clinic for girls, and a spring Easter egg hunt featuring visits from Peter Cottontail and a petting zoo.
The council also highlighted the efforts of Shane Daly, the community services director, who coordinated with the police department to assist an elderly resident in need of heat during a recent storm. This instance of collaboration between town departments was praised by the council as exemplary of effective emergency response.
The public works department received commendation for their performance during recent snowstorms, with members noting the cleanliness and safety of Long Hill roads compared to those in neighboring towns. The council expressed appreciation for the effective snow removal efforts, emphasizing the positive impact on residents.
Further discussions included a report on police activity for January, detailing 3,236 calls for service, 21 motor vehicle accidents, and two DWI arrests. The police department also engaged with the community through a job fair and a swearing-in ceremony for children as honorary police officers. Additionally, they received donations of office furniture from a closed corporation, which helped reduce costs for taxpayers.
The meeting concluded with a focus on community engagement, with the announcement of a pancake breakfast hosted by the Sterling Firehouse on March 1st. This event, described as popular among residents, was promoted as an opportunity for community members to gather and enjoy a meal together.
In the public comment section, residents raised concerns about the repavement of Long Hill Road, urging the township to simplify communications regarding the project. Suggestions included providing clearer information on the township website, especially concerning road closures, and enhancing communication efforts to better include the senior community.
