Long-Serving Board Member Carmine Venice Honored for 21 Years of Service at Mountainside Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Mountainside School Board celebrated the contributions of Carmine Venice, a long-serving member recognized for his impactful 21-year tenure. The board and community members expressed deep gratitude for Venice’s dedication to the district.
The meeting, which took place with formal adherence to state regulations and public participation protocols, began with a notable recognition of Venice’s contributions to the Mountainside School District. Superintendent Janet Walling led the commendation, emphasizing Venice’s significant role in the district’s development, including his influence on contract negotiations and infrastructure improvements. Walling presented Venice with a “Tree of Honor,” symbolizing the enduring impact of his service. The superintendent praised Venice’s dedication, stating, “There are not many board of education members that have gone ahead and dedicated themselves in the amount of years and the amount of effort that he has done for us here at Mountainside.”
Board members and community attendees joined Walling in expressing their appreciation for Venice. One board member remarked on Venice’s courage and principles, which inspired others to engage in school board governance. Another member highlighted that the board’s current success was partly due to Venice’s involvement, saying, “This board truly is not where it is today if Carmine was not a part of it.”
Venice addressed the attendees, thanking the community for their support and reflecting on the collective efforts that led to the district’s recognition as one of the top five elementary schools in the state.
The meeting also featured the recognition of students who participated in a Veterans Day celebration. Students were honored for their written works on patriotism and community support, with winners from each grade level receiving awards. The ceremony underscored the students’ public speaking skills as they read their submissions, culminating in awards for first, second, and third places in each grade category.
Further accolades were given to the “Trailblazers of the Month,” honoring students from Beachwood and Deerfield Elementary Schools. The recognitions highlighted the students’ achievements and contributions to their school communities.
In addition to the tributes and student recognitions, the board conducted routine business. A roll call confirmed unanimous votes on various agenda items related to budget, finance, personnel, curriculum, and policy.
Public participation was encouraged, with community members given the opportunity to address the board. Christopher Minkx, a resident, took the floor to discuss policy 7510 and express his appreciation for Venice’s advice during his tenure on the board. Minkx praised Venice’s experience and kindness, highlighting the accomplishments achieved under his guidance.
Other community members, including Dante Joy, shared similar sentiments, comparing Venice to Yoda from Star Wars for his wisdom and guidance. Joy expressed gratitude for the time spent serving alongside Venice, while another attendee, Kathy, credited Venice for his foundational support during her initial years on the board and the success of various initiatives and referendums.
Genie Mintosh, a community member, expressed gratitude for the learning experience she had while working with Venice, acknowledging that his calm demeanor and insights often shaped her perspective on board issues. She noted the challenges Venice faced during his earlier terms and credited his perseverance for greatly influencing the current state of the district.
The meeting concluded with board members sharing personal anecdotes and reflections on Venice’s influence. The camaraderie and mutual respect among board members were evident as they reminisced about their collaborative efforts, particularly during challenging times.
