Longmeadow Select Board Tackles Grounds Maintenance Woes Amid Staffing Shortages
- Meeting Overview:
The Longmeadow Select Board meeting on June 1st, 2026, centered on issues within the Department of Public Works (DPW), the efforts of Town Manager Lynn Simmons, and community achievements. The board addressed challenges in grounds maintenance, praised the town manager’s leadership, congratulated local athletes and community members, and discussed improvements to town policies and staff development.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the ongoing challenges faced by the Department of Public Works (DPW) concerning grounds maintenance. Members of the board expressed concerns over the condition of town properties, parks, and athletic fields, with specific emphasis on the mowing of these areas. Complaints have been rising regarding unkempt areas, particularly tall grass, and the state of baseball and softball fields. The DPW’s difficulties are compounded by staffing shortages, as they are currently operating with only two full-time employees. One employee is on long-term medical leave, and two positions remain vacant, hampering their ability to manage the seasonal workload effectively.
Seasonal part-time employees, primarily high school or college students, typically start work after Memorial Day, leaving a gap in the workforce during the critical period from March to late May when grass growth is most rapid. To mitigate some of these challenges, the DPW has implemented efficiency improvements, such as purchasing a robotic field liner that reduces the time required for lining fields, particularly at Wolf Swamp. Additionally, the DPW replaced a 25-year-old sandpro, used for raking ball fields. However, training staff on this new equipment has delayed regular maintenance activities, adding to the department’s current challenges.
The mowing of Wolf Swamp Field has largely been contracted out due to insufficient staffing, but the costs for this service doubled when the contract was bid out in April. As a result, the DPW has focused on managing what they can internally, prioritizing tasks within their limited capacity. Although efforts have been made to redirect other DPW crews to assist with mowing, this has led to increased complaints about potholes and custodial coverage issues in municipal buildings. The board acknowledged the current issues and expressed a commitment to addressing public concerns and improving the conditions of town properties.
Town Manager Lynn Simmons’s performance was another focal point of the meeting. Board members expressed substantial appreciation for her professionalism and ability to handle complex situations. The board highlighted her strategic approach to budget and departmental issues, with one member noting her significant role in managing difficult personnel and projects. The board’s positive feedback reinforced their appreciation for her leadership and the competency she brings to her role.
In tandem with praise for the town manager, the board discussed the development of town staff. Mike, who transitioned from an administrative role in the parks and recreation department to become an assistant town manager, was highlighted as an example of internal talent recognition and growth. Lynn emphasized her collaborative working relationship with the staff, attributing her success to their collective efforts in tackling challenges.
The meeting also highlighted various community achievements. Vice Chair Vineeth Hemavathi expressed gratitude for the successful Memorial Day ceremony, praising veteran services director Lena Veluro and volunteers. The board also celebrated the Longmeadow Boys track team for winning their fifth consecutive Western Mass title, with special recognition given to Nicholas Rosio for his pole vaulting achievement and Alex Sever for winning the Division 3 state championship in triple jump. Additionally, a community highlight involved a nine-year-old boy, Lucas Christopher Farcus, who recently underwent a double lung transplant. The board acknowledged the community’s support during his recovery and celebrated his discharge from the hospital.
In terms of town governance, the board reviewed select board and town manager policies. The town manager, along with a colleague, has been working on modifying a best practice document from the Division of Local Services to align with Longmeadow’s standards. This revised document, currently 120 pages long, aims to enhance existing financial policies and is expected to be presented to the board by June 15. The board also discussed the development of a matrix format to identify areas needing improvement in general policies, with plans to complete the review by summer’s end.
The meeting also included updates on the town manager’s budget task force. Interviews with seven candidates concluded, and the task force will proceed with four. There was a motion to appoint Shelley DeWolf to the task force. Additionally, the ratification of the police chief’s contract was postponed, and the board discussed a letter for the 250th-anniversary time capsule, expressing satisfaction with its content.
