Lonsdale City Council Addresses Road Improvements, Approves Police Sergeant Position
- Meeting Overview:
The Lonsdale City Council meeting on October 9, 2025, focused on significant infrastructure and public safety enhancements, approving a job description for a new police sergeant and discussing funding for road improvements due to increased traffic and deteriorating conditions.
The council’s deliberations on road improvements underscored the urgency of securing funding to address significant wear and tear on roads, particularly those heavily trafficked near local schools. The potential of securing grants through Bolton and Mink was highlighted, with council members expressing optimism due to the firm’s successful track record in obtaining such funding. One member noted the importance of the road work, emphasizing, “It’s a great road that needs the work and it’s very highly used with the school.” However, concerns about the city’s financial burden remained, as assessments for past construction projects had not yet been levied. The project cost was estimated to exceed $1.5 million, sparking discussions on the feasibility of acquiring full funding through grants.
In parallel, the meeting addressed upcoming economic development initiatives, with the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s economic development grant program taking center stage. The city administrator highlighted the necessity of applying for a grant to conduct a feasibility study that would define Lonsdale’s trade area and gather essential demographic information. This study, estimated to cost between $6,200 and $9,800, was seen as crucial for attracting businesses to the area. Council members unanimously supported the grant application, recognizing the benefit of having concrete data to present to potential developers.
Attention then shifted to the Lonsdale Police Department, where the council approved a job description for a new police sergeant position. The chief of police outlined the role, which would support operations, investigations, and oversight of patrol officers. The position was recommended to be classified at grade 14, step 8 of the city’s pay scale, equivalent to $53.27 per hour. However, discussions arose regarding whether the position should be elevated to a higher grade for better career progression. Ultimately, the council decided to proceed with the current recommendation, leaving room for adjustments during the hiring process. The position will be filled internally, without increasing the department’s headcount.
The meeting also covered various other community and administrative topics. Jeffrey Van Ree, a resident, expressed concerns over potential traffic congestion and accidents on Ash Street due to proposed apartment developments on Birch Street. It was noted that the Minnesota Department of Transportation had begun preliminary design work to assess traffic impacts. The council considered adding turn lanes to manage traffic flow better. Van Ree also suggested that the developers should handle the costs of necessary road improvements, rather than burdening taxpayers.
Additionally, the council approved the appointment of Heidi Griffin to the library board, following a positive interview with the mayor and another council member. Griffin’s rapport with library staff was noted as a significant advantage. Council members also reported on ongoing projects, including the wellhead protection plan and wastewater treatment facility evaluation. Public works updates included nearing completion of blacktop patching and the commencement of compost grinding.
Community engagement was a recurring theme, with discussions about upcoming events such as the library’s Halloween party and a “decorated duck contest” where the winner could become “mayor for a day.” The council also announced a special public hearing for the preliminary and final plat of the Lale Business Park scheduled for October 27th.
