Lonsdale Council Weighs Lift Station Options Amid Budget Discussions and Personnel Changes
- Meeting Overview:
The Lonsdale City Council meeting on December 11th focused on several topics, including the evaluation of options for a new lift station, the approval of the city’s final 2026 budget and tax levy, and the promotion of Officer Jack Schliker to sergeant. These discussions were complemented by updates on infrastructure projects and acknowledgment of long-standing community contributions.
The meeting commenced with a discussion on the location and design of a new lift station for the Bixby parcel, presented by the city engineer. Two alternatives were proposed: one serving only the Bixby parcel, with estimated costs of $547,000, and another oversized option to accommodate potential future development north of 70th Street, carrying an estimated cost of $656,500. The council deliberated the necessity of investing in infrastructure for areas not currently annexed into the city, with a majority leaning towards the first option. Concerns were expressed about the practicality of spending extra funds on future developments that may not materialize for decades, with one council member voicing a preference for using resources for existing city needs.
The conversation also touched on the importance of a permanent generator for the lift station and the potential impact on surrounding residential areas. While the city engineer confirmed the infeasibility of a gravity sewer connection, the council emphasized the need to prioritize immediate and concrete developments over speculative projects.
Transitioning to the city’s fiscal matters, the council reviewed and approved the 2026 budget and property tax levy. The budget, prepared after eight meetings, outlined a 3% wage increase for staff and included a switch to a private insurance market to reduce premiums. The city anticipated a property tax valuation increase of 6.76%, leading to a slight decrease in the tax rate. Noteworthy budget allocations were made for mosquito control, potential revenues from a proposed apartment project, and federal funding for the police department. The tax impact for residents was projected to range from an increase of $8 to $137, while businesses could see changes between a decrease of $2 to an increase of $265.
Council members expressed satisfaction with the budget process, noting it addressed long-standing needs and included strategic planning for infrastructure improvements, such as road maintenance and a pavement management plan. The proposal from Bolton and Mink for a comprehensive pavement improvement plan was approved.
A personnel change was approved, with Officer Jack Schliker promoted to the position of sergeant. Chief Jason Schmidtz commended Schliker’s leadership qualities, and the council recognized the police force’s positive reputation in the community. Schliker, who joined the department in 2015, was selected for the role following a unanimous decision from the interview panel.
Additionally, the council acknowledged the contributions of Joe Kadata, who resigned from the planning and zoning commission after 21 years of service. His extensive experience as a home builder and commitment to the community were lauded, with the council expressing appreciation for his volunteer work.
In further discussions, the procurement of a new John Deere 1585 lawn mower for city parks and snow removal was approved, taking advantage of government incentive pricing. The council also received updates on various infrastructure projects, including a water tower siting study and a wellhead protection plan, alongside the success of recent community events at the city’s liquor store.
