- Meeting Overview:
The Lower Town Council meeting featured the recognition of life-saving actions by Corporal Jonathan Sheek, the swearing-in of Officer Romantino, and a proclamation for student-athlete Noah Plen’s accomplishments, alongside routine municipal business.
The council meeting commenced with the mayor presenting a Distinguished Service Award to Corporal Jonathan Sheek for his courageous actions during a severe motor vehicle accident in Florida. Sheek, while off duty, intervened in a situation involving a drunk driver and burning vehicles, risking his own safety to help extract individuals trapped inside. The mayor emphasized that Sheek’s actions prevented further loss of life, and he was commended for his bravery. The audience applauded Sheek’s heroism.
Following this, the chief of police introduced Officer Romantino for his swearing-in ceremony. Romantino, a resident of Egg Harbor Township, brought with him an extensive background, including degrees in fire science and intelligence studies, as well as experience as an EMT and firefighter. His father, a retired lieutenant from the Egg Harbor Police Department, was present to pin his badge. The oath of office was administered, with Romantino affirming his duties and allegiance to the Constitution. The ceremony concluded with applause, and family members were invited for a photo opportunity.
Another highlight was the proclamation for Noah Plen, celebrated for his achievements in sports and academics. Noah, who participated in multiple sports through the Lower Township Parks and Recreation Department, was recognized for his recent graduation from St. Augustine Preparatory School and his upcoming attendance at the University of Delaware as a Division 1 scholarship student-athlete in men’s lacrosse. His accomplishments included being a two-time USA Lacrosse All-American, a member of the state championship team, and receiving accolades for his academic performance, including being on the Dean’s List. The mayor and council congratulated him on his success and wished him well in his future endeavors, earning applause from the audience.
The meeting briefly paused to allow attendees to clear out, particularly those from the police department, before continuing with further business. As the meeting transitioned, a former manager, Jim Ridway, expressed gratitude for the council’s ongoing recognition of young community members as they transition into adulthood.
The Council then moved forward with routine business, including a motion to amend a resolution, specifically identifying resolution 2024 D 262. There was some initial confusion regarding the resolution number, which was later clarified as 263. The Deputy Mayor confirmed the correction, and a motion was made and seconded to proceed. The roll call confirmed unanimous agreement from the council members regarding the motion.
The agenda transitioned to the consent agenda, where a member of the Council proposed to amend an ordinance concerning an assessor position to classify it under non-union administrative management. This amendment was seconded, and a roll call was conducted, resulting in a unanimous vote in favor of the amendment. The consent agenda included the approval of minutes from a prior meeting, multiple resolutions ranging from numbers 2024 247 to 2024 269, and various ordinances related to municipal regulations and traffic amendments.
Notably, ordinance number 2024 2409, which addressed towing and storage area requirements, was presented for a second reading. There were no comments from the Council or the public regarding this ordinance, and a motion to move forward was made and seconded, leading to another unanimous vote. Subsequently, ordinance 2024 2410, focusing on lead-based paint inspections for certain rental properties, was also presented for a second reading and public hearing. Again, no comments were raised, and the motion to proceed passed unanimously.
The meeting then opened to general public comments, where a resident named Kevin Gore expressed gratitude towards the Council for addressing a past issue related to washouts on Village Road. He praised the Public Works Department for their effective remediation efforts, noting that the area was now accessible for both him and his dog. Kevin’s positive feedback about the public works was appreciated by the council, who acknowledged his kind remarks.
During the public comment session, Deputy Mayor Perry commended the recent improvements on Wildwood Avenue and Bay Drive, emphasizing the importance of enhanced safety measures such as crosswalks and reduced speed limits. He noted the increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the area and highlighted the effective police enforcement of speed regulations. However, he did mention a communication issue regarding road closures during the construction.
Council members continued with their comments. One councilman recognized the efforts of the recreation department in reviving the concert series, expressing satisfaction with the turnout and enjoyment of the events. He also reminded attendees about the upcoming publication of regulations affecting the community, particularly those near the bay.
The meeting proceeded with reminders from the mayor regarding National Night Out scheduled for the following day at the local high school, and soccer registration dates. Additionally, updates on playground developments were discussed.
