- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Lower Town Council celebrated the re-accreditation of the local police department, a significant honor indicating the department’s adherence to the highest standards of law enforcement. Alongside this recognition, the council also addressed important community projects, including capital improvements and infrastructure development throughout the township.
The meeting opened with a commendation for the Lower Township Police Department, which has maintained its accredited status. This achievement places the department among a select group of elite law enforcement agencies in New Jersey. The council recognized the importance of the accreditation and the rigorous standards met by the department. During this ceremony, Captain Mike Mjan was promoted, with the Mayor sharing a personal anecdote about Mjan’s father, highlighting the familial support that underpins the careers of law enforcement officers.
Additionally, the police department was acknowledged for supporting employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve forces. An officer from the department was nominated for a Patriot Award by the Department of Defense. The Chief of Police discussed the department’s 2023 accomplishments, including the implementation of automated license plate readers, drone programs, and officer promotions. Goals for 2024 were outlined, focusing on technology integration, digitization of records, and recruitment and retention strategies.
Moving on to infrastructure projects, the council detailed several capital projects underway in the township. The projects discussed included the reconstruction of Wildwood Avenue, the resurfacing of Bay Drive, and the creation of beach access pathways. Updates were provided on the progress of these developments, with expected completion dates and the status of permit applications.
The engineer’s report highlighted ongoing improvements at Diamond Beach Park, with the council discussing the impact of these enhancements on the community. Other projects such as renovations at Rotary Community Park, the Francis Avenue storm sewer evaluation, and the Ohio Avenue Pump Station emergency replacement were also detailed, with timelines and anticipated outcomes addressed.
Public participation in the meeting brought forward concerns about local infrastructure, specifically the condition of the intersection at New Jersey and Columbia avenues. The council acknowledged these issues and committed to evaluating and addressing the standing water and deteriorating asphalt reported by a community member.
The meeting concluded with discussions on upcoming events, such as Escape the Cape and a family day at Glen Mgan Park. Additionally, the council celebrated the receipt of a $400,000 state grant for the North K pool.
The public works building concept design and site remediation investigation were also discussed.
