Loxahatchee Groves Town Council Appoints Todd McClendon to Fill Vacant Council Seat
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Loxahatchee Groves Town Council meeting, the primary focus was the appointment of a new council member to fill the seat vacated by Phillis Maniglia. After hearing from several candidates, the council voted to appoint Todd McClendon. This decision followed an extensive deliberation process in which community engagement and candidate presentations played a role.
The council meeting was marked by a turnout of candidates expressing their desire to serve on the council. Todd McClendon, who ultimately secured the appointment, presented a strong case by highlighting his past accomplishments and dedication to the community. He referenced his previous term, during which he successfully advocated for reduced speed limits on Okeechobee Boulevard, mandated underground utilities, and established the Greenway Trail System. McClendon underscored the necessity of teamwork and prioritizing the community’s interests over personal agendas, a message that resonated with the council.
Bill Ford, another candidate, outlined his longstanding involvement with the town since moving from Indiana after law school. He emphasized the importance of preserving Loxahatchee Groves’ rural character while acknowledging the need for strategic growth and development.
Brian Zenowski presented his candidacy by discussing traffic safety initiatives and the significance of clean drainage systems to prevent flooding. He advocated for protecting property rights and implementing suitable business regulations, reflecting his focus on maintaining community standards.
Palace Santana, with a background in the agricultural sector, emphasized the economic importance of Loxahatchee Groves and likened the council’s responsibilities to those of a CEO managing a significant company. He stressed the need for competent leadership to preserve the town’s agricultural and equestrian heritage.
The council also heard from William Stefins, who used a football metaphor to describe the council’s efforts, and Manish Sud, who focused on the financial pressures faced by the town and his business and engineering background as assets for addressing these challenges. Danielle Herity, a new resident, shared her experience in hospitality and event production.
Following the candidate presentations, the council began the nomination process. Bill Ford and Manish Sud were both nominated but did not receive the necessary votes for appointment. A nomination for Joe Stevens failed to secure a second. Ultimately, Todd McClendon was nominated, seconded, and approved by a vote of three-to-one. His appointment was confirmed after a formal motion and a second vote.
The meeting’s conclusion saw McClendon being sworn in, though the process faced interruptions from audience members, prompting a call for order. Despite the brief disruption, McClendon’s appointment was finalized, and council members congratulated him on his new role.
In addition to the council appointment, the meeting included a public comment segment where Mary McNicholas from the Loxahatchee Groves Land Owners Association announced the revival of their scholarship program. The program, which had previously awarded eight scholarships of $1,000 each, aims to support community members pursuing traditional university education, special needs education, and trade schools. McNicholas expressed gratitude to contributors and invited interested parties to assist with the program.
