In addition to the team accolades, the meeting celebrated individual achievements in journalism. A total of 47 awards were distributed to 33 students, recognizing both current students and recent graduates. Among the honored students, Zahara Chow, the current editor-in-chief, was highlighted for her outstanding performance in a statewide write-off contest, where she competed against approximately 25 other students to secure first place. This achievement echoed the success of last year’s editor, Camille Eckles, and was met with applause from the board and attendees. Chow is set to receive additional recognition from The Record newspaper with a plaque and monetary award in the upcoming year.

The distribution of awards continued as Pastor called each student by name, honoring their hard work and contributions to The Lighthouse. The ceremony included graduates and current students, with some receiving multiple awards for their individual accomplishments over the past year.

The meeting also recognized Mr. Tim Belmont, a high school English teacher, who was commended for his excellence and professionalism. Belmont had been nominated for a national award, though he did not receive it, his nomination alone was noteworthy as only two teachers from New Jersey were considered for this honor. A representative praised Belmont’s dedication to education.

Following the recognition segments, the board addressed several financial and operational matters. A financial review confirmed that the district has sufficient funds to meet its financial obligations for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. This assurance was supported by resolutions that were discussed and unanimously approved by the board members. The board also discussed upcoming negotiations for the teachers’ contract, which are scheduled to begin on January 27th. The board had already met with their attorney to outline objectives for these negotiations, emphasizing their importance for the district’s future.

The meeting proceeded with the approval of various resolutions related to finance, policy, and personnel matters, each receiving unanimous support from the board members present. Additionally, it was announced that the board’s reorganization meeting would take place on January 2nd, during which new members will be sworn in. This meeting will be followed by the next regular board meeting scheduled for January 28th.

In the realm of student activities, the board heard a report from the student representative detailing several events and initiatives throughout December. Among these, the Animal Welfare Club’s partnership with the Humane Society of Bergen County for a donation drive and the World Language Honor Society’s annual sock drive for the homeless were highlighted. Academic achievements were also noted, with over 60 students participating in FBLA Regional testing, resulting in 13 students placing in Northern Regional competitive events.

The board expressed gratitude for the contributions of Mrs. Corrine Haggerty, who had filled a vacant board seat for the past three months and would be stepping down after the meeting. As the session drew to a close, the board president extended holiday wishes to all attendees and reiterated the timeline for the upcoming school term and negotiations.
