- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Lyndhurst School Board meeting, a significant highlight was the district’s commendation of Convergent, a company that contributed a substantial security upgrade to Franklin School. The district received all necessary cameras, wiring, and labor as a donation, which would have otherwise cost approximately $50,000 to $60,000. This major improvement was facilitated through a connection made by a kindergarten teacher at Franklin, whose father works for Convergent. The project included not only the security installations but also a fresh coat of paint for the classrooms.
The board recognized the importance of such contributions, emphasizing the impact of enhanced security on the school environment. The representative from Convergent highlighted their annual initiative called “convergence social responsibility day,” during which employees engage in community service projects. This initiative benefited the Lyndhurst community and was met with appreciation from both the board and attendees.
Another noteworthy moment was the introduction of Drew Banov, a senior at Lers High School and the newly elected student representative. Drew provided an extensive report on recent and upcoming school activities. He mentioned that Lers High School had been engaging students through events such as Spirit Week, a Homecoming dance, and pep rallies, fostering school spirit and community involvement.
Drew also highlighted the first meeting of the National Honor Society for senior members, future service opportunities, and the induction ceremony scheduled for November 26. The Peer Group Connection program and various clubs like the Future Business Leaders of America and the Robotics Club had held interest meetings, showing strong student engagement. He noted the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and Banned Books Week by the media center and upcoming events like the PSATs and a journalism program at Red Bank University. Drew concluded his report by mentioning the fall play “Charlie in the Chocolate Factory” and auditions for the school talent show, illustrating a vibrant and active student body.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Maria Mupus, a middle school teacher, who discussed a youth leader award received by students for a project centered around social entrepreneurship. The project was in collaboration with the Loto Nation in Pine Ridge, North Dakota, an area with the highest poverty rates in the U.S. Mupus praised the students’ initiative in organizing a donations drive, collecting over a thousand items, creating promotional materials, and writing grants. The board and audience applauded the students’ achievements.
Following these presentations, the board moved on to routine business. Several resolutions related to finance, education, curriculum, and policy were adopted unanimously. A personnel matter was addressed with the appointment of Karin Hagerty to fill a vacant board seat. The chairperson expressed gratitude for Hagerty’s willingness to step up. Hagerty took the oath of office.
In addition, the board discussed and filled the vacant vice president position, nominating and appointing Michael Valvano. This motion also passed without opposition.
The Superintendent reported positive preliminary findings from a recent district audit. The administration aims to maintain this positive financial standing. The Superintendent also mentioned a recent monitoring program, suggesting that the district is likely to pass the review based on previous evaluations covering various operational aspects such as instruction, fiscal management, and personnel. The graduation rate was reported to have increased to 96.7%.
