Lyndhurst School Board Honors Veteran Members and Celebrates Student Journalists
- Meeting Overview:
The Lyndhurst School Board meeting was marked by tributes to departing members Chris Andrinopoulos and Elaine Stella, recognizing their years of service and dedication to the district.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to honoring board members Chris Andrinopoulos and Elaine Stella, both of whom were stepping down after years of service. Superintendent Joseph A. DeCorso emphasized the profound impact both members had on the district. Elaine Stella, with her impressive 45-year association with the district, was lauded for her exceptional understanding of policy and her unwavering professionalism. The superintendent noted, “Nobody knows policy like Elaine Stella,” reflecting the deep respect she commanded among her colleagues. Her recent two-term service was highlighted for its commitment and professionalism.
Chris Andrinopoulos was celebrated for his transformative influence during a challenging period for the board. His leadership was credited with strengthening governance and providing a clear direction for the district. Superintendent DeCorso remarked, “His leadership has left a lasting imprint on our school and our community,” underscoring the significant role Andrinopoulos played in navigating the district through financial and administrative challenges. The board collectively acknowledged the contributions of both members.
In addition to recognizing board members, the meeting celebrated the achievements of student journalists from the Lighthouse program. The program, led by educator Miss Klein, has grown substantially since its inception, evolving into a robust journalism platform that integrates modern media such as social media and podcasts. Miss Pastor highlighted the program’s expansion from eight participants to 32, with additional contributions from student photographers and illustrators. The Lighthouse received numerous accolades, including first place for overall print excellence and second place for online journalism at a state competition. The program also earned a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The meeting also included individual recognitions, with students receiving a total of 31 awards from the Garden State Scholastic Press Association. Among the honorees were editor-in-chief Sahara Chor and Drew Braftoft, a recent graduate who accepted an award for online overall excellence.
Financial discussions were another focal point of the meeting, with auditor Mr. Bliss presenting the audit findings. He reported that the financial statements were fairly stated, and there were no material weaknesses in internal controls. The district’s financial health was deemed stable, with a slight increase in fund balance and prudent management of capital and maintenance reserves. Mr. Bliss highlighted the importance of obtaining quotes for services and ensuring proper documentation for contracts, noting areas for improvement in financial processes. The board’s effective management was commended, particularly in light of rising costs associated with health insurance and aging facilities.
The board’s business proceedings included passing several resolutions across various committees, including finance, education, curriculum, policy, rules, regulations, safety, security, and health. A notable decision involved a paraprofessional raise, aligning their pay with teachers’ raises. A board member expressed gratitude for this decision, acknowledging the hard work of paraprofessionals and their deserving recognition.
The meeting concluded with a farewell speech from Chris Andrinopoulos, reflecting on his nine-year tenure. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and emphasized the importance of collaboration among board members, administration, teachers, and the community. His remarks conveyed confidence in the district’s leadership and future, highlighting the meaningful relationships and experiences gained during his service.
