- Meeting Overview:
The recent MACCRAY School Board meeting covered various topics, from the implementation of the fast Bridge testing system to significant achievements in athletics. Fast Bridge testing, which has replaced the star testing system at the school, is now a key component of the Minnesota Department of Education’s assessment requirements. This new testing method, scheduled to be conducted three times a year, aims to better correlate with the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) and offers a tool for early identification and intervention for students at risk in reading and math. The meeting also highlighted the school’s recent athletic successes, particularly in volleyball, where the team has defeated several top-ranked opponents.
A major focal point of the meeting was the introduction and ongoing implementation of the fast Bridge testing system. This system categorizes students into risk levels for reading and math, allowing educators to target interventions more effectively. The testing also includes assessments for dyslexia risks, enabling tailored support for students who require additional help. Board members discussed the correlation of fast Bridge data with other testing metrics, emphasizing its potential to improve student performance and identifying areas requiring attention. The school aims to leverage this data to enhance student outcomes before the next testing window in January.
In athletics, the volleyball team has shown remarkable resilience, securing wins against some of the top-ranked teams in the state. The team triumphed over RTR, Minota, and Tyler, all leading teams in the rankings. Meanwhile, the football program faced challenges due to a conflict involving ineligible players on the Cambi team, which impacted playoff seeding and tournament structures.
At the same time, the school board acknowledged logistical challenges in accommodating the growing number of participants in cross-country and junior high boys basketball teams. Moving forward, discussions included potential solutions such as constructing an additional court to alleviate scheduling conflicts. The introduction of a physical therapist from Olivia Hospital to support athletic teams was also a point of discussion, with the possibility of expanding this role to cover more sports activities.
The school board was pleased to report the acquisition of a free Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through a state program. Valued at approximately $15,600, this device will serve as an additional safety resource for traveling sports teams. In the realm of health and safety, the meeting also mentioned a flu shot clinic organized with CentraCare, offering staff and students updated COVID vaccines.
The board’s appreciation for school principals was formally expressed during October’s Principal Appreciation Month, recognizing their contributions to maintaining smooth school operations. The ongoing development of an Outdoor Learning space, expected to be completed by December 1, was another topic of discussioned initiative.
Parent-teacher conferences were improved with a new sign-up system. Moreover, student feedback was collected through reflection worksheets aimed at increasing their input during these conferences.
Additionally, the board reviewed updates to two policies: Policy 506 on student discipline, modified to align with new state statutes, and Policy 611 on homeschooling, which sets deadlines for material purchases to coincide with the school’s fiscal year. The board confirmed that state aid could be collected if homeschooled students participated in classes.
