MACCRAY School Board Reviews Audit Findings and Celebrates Student Engagement Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent MACCRAY School Board meeting, the presentation of the annual audit and efforts to enhance student engagement were topics. The audit revealed a stable financial outlook with an increase in fund balance, while the board also celebrated initiatives encouraging student involvement and community building.
The financial audit presentation delivered by John Archer, a representative from Shelon Winering Company, highlighted the district’s fiscal health. Archer reported an “unmodified opinion” on the school’s financial statements. He detailed the audit process, which included reviews of financial documents such as bank statements and invoices. A noteworthy introduction during the audit was the new GASB 101 standard, which changes the accounting of compensated absences, impacting the district’s liabilities. Archer noted no compliance issues with Minnesota statutes and pointed out that the audit faced no significant difficulties, crediting the responsiveness and accuracy of the district’s staff.
The audit findings revealed that the district’s general fund balance increased by $514,000, surpassing the budgeted amount of $210,000. Archer identified higher-than-expected revenues, particularly in general and special education aid, as key contributors to this growth. Although expenditures were slightly above last year’s figures, they remained below budget expectations. Archer also noted an increase in the property tax levy and a decrease in federal funding due to the expiration of specific grants, yet highlighted a positive trend in the district’s cash balances, with the general fund reaching $3.7 million. The unassigned fund balance at 23.6% exceeded the district policy minimum.
Transitioning to student engagement, the board discussed various initiatives aimed at fostering a positive educational environment. The introduction of DARE classes, set to span 12 weeks with a spring graduation, was met with enthusiasm. Additionally, the board reviewed a new social studies curriculum aligning with Minnesota standards, delivered in an engaging newspaper format to explore historical and civic topics. This curriculum provides each student with a mini magazine to facilitate learning.
The board emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities, noting over half of the student body participated in fall activities. Changes were also made to the STEAM and music class rotations, allowing for more frequent sessions to improve continuity and engagement. The importance of physical education was underscored, with research supporting its role in reducing disruptive behavior and promoting academic achievement.
In a nod to community spirit, the board praised student participation in events like fall and winter parties, field trips, and assemblies. These activities are designed to cultivate a love for learning beyond academics. The board also highlighted the success of initiatives like the “pride tickets” and “Blanchett Bucks,” systems rewarding positive behavior and academic performance with tangible incentives.
A visitor’s recent experience at the school was recounted, with students sharing insights and experiences, leaving a positive impression. This engagement was deemed impactful.
The meeting concluded with discussions on administrative matters, including planning the school start dates for future years and organizing a special meeting to evaluate Mr. Holm. The board also approved the 2024-2025 audited financial statements and accepted various donations, including funds and memorial trees, through a formal resolution process.
