Mahtomedi School Board Celebrates Teacher of the Year and Tackles Upcoming Referendum
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Mahtomedi School Board meeting highlighted the recognition of Jim Lane as Teacher of the Year, a discussion on the upcoming November referendum, and the approval of significant donations and grants. The agenda was filled with acknowledgments of educational achievements and strategic planning for the school district’s future.
Jim Lane, a long-standing and educator, was honored as Teacher of the Year by the Mahtomedi School Board. Lane, who teaches life science and engineering, has been with the school for 13 years and has consistently gone beyond his teaching duties to enrich students’ experiences. He leads various student clubs, including an eco club and a debate team. A representative from the Mahtomedi Teacher of the Year Committee praised Lane’s contributions, emphasizing his ability to inspire students and build meaningful relationships. The representative stated, “The greatest honor of teaching is the opportunity to inspire and rekindle a sense of wonder and amazement in others.”
Lane’s impact extends beyond the classroom, as highlighted by a testimonial from a student named Julian Chisc. Chisc shared his positive experiences with Lane, noting the teacher’s unique approach that values genuine learning over traditional grading systems.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Mara Winky from MAFE, outlining the organization’s fundraising efforts to support Mahtomedi public schools. The goal for the year was set at just over $50,000, with a portion already raised through payroll deductions and other donations. The funds will be used for scholarships, classroom technology, student grants, and essential supplies for families in need. Winky emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “We rely on donations from community members like you to distribute these grants across the district.”
As the meeting progressed, the board discussed the upcoming referendum scheduled for November. The student representative, Matt Stadenski, highlighted the significance of the referendum, which includes proposed improvements to the school environment and safety measures. The changes aim to enhance various aspects of student life, including performing arts and athletics, and are recognized as necessary by current students for the benefit of future generations. Stadenski encouraged students to engage with the referendum, despite their limited time left in high school, and shared a personal anecdote about his involvement in a birdwatching club that has seen increased participation due to grant-funded resources.
The board also approved donations and grants totaling $17,455.41 for September, acknowledging the community’s generosity. These funds are intended to further the school district’s mission in line with donors’ wishes. Additionally, the superintendent’s goals, which align with the strategic plan focusing on literacy, college and career readiness, and communication, were approved unanimously after several reviews.
During the meeting, members discussed the upcoming retreat facilitated by the Minnesota School Board Association and addressed the challenge of coordinating schedules for all members. The retreat is scheduled for November 5th at 9:30 AM and is part of the board’s efforts to enhance governance and strategic planning.
The curriculum advisory committee’s focus on the “World’s Best Workforce” initiative and the need for volunteers for various roles, including the book fair chair and spring planning, were also mentioned. The principal’s report highlighted efforts to establish reading routines at home.
