Mahwah School Board Discusses Bond Referendum and Facility Improvements at January Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest meeting held on January 7, 2026, the Mahwah School Board focused on discussions regarding an upcoming bond referendum, set for a special election on March 10. This referendum, which will appear in two separate questions on the ballot, aims to address district-wide maintenance, repairs, and infrastructure needs, as well as larger additions and programmatic enhancements.
Dr. Durro, the superintendent, provided a report on the architectural renderings for the proposed projects, which were shared with both the board and the community. He emphasized that these visuals are important for conveying the intended improvements and that the finalized referendum logo will be a key element in campaign materials. Dr. Durro plans for approximately 20 informational sessions before the vote, intended to engage the community and answer any questions about the projects.
The first question on the ballot will address basic maintenance and repairs across the district, while the second question will focus on more significant additions, such as a new gymnasium at Mahwah High School. This facility is strategically planned near existing tennis courts and is envisioned to accommodate up to 1,000 spectators, complete with training rooms and locker facilities, thereby enhancing its functionality for athletic events.
Further improvement plans include the redesign of various school facilities, providing clearer visualizations, such as field lighting and fencing at Rambo Ridge soccer field. The superintendent highlighted the importance of these enhancements for both educational purposes and community activities, with particular attention to gymnasiums at Betsy Ross and George Washington schools, designed for flexible use.
Community outreach was underscored as a priority, with assurances that all stakeholders will be kept informed through various channels, including the distribution of flyers for town hall meetings. The board encouraged community members to participate in these sessions to ensure informed voting on the referendum.
In addition to the bond referendum discussions, Miss Hiramoto, the business administrator, noted the absence of committee listings on the agenda, which will be addressed in future meetings. She reported on the business office’s current focus on year-end financial processing, including tasks related to employee compensation and healthcare coverage.
During the meeting, Miss Yamoto commended the business office staff for their diligent work on quarterly state and federal financial reports. She also praised the buildings and grounds staff, led by Gregory Romero, for completing significant maintenance projects during the winter break. These projects included HVAC filter changes, grease trap cleaning, kitchen sewer line jetting, and building inspections, all accomplished safely while students were absent.
Another point of discussion was the board members’ recognition of the upcoming bond referendum. The board president elaborated on the nature of the referendum, explaining that it involves borrowing funds through bond sales to finance large-scale district improvements. This process aims to provide upfront funding while distributing costs over several years, with the potential for specific state aid. The president likened it to a home equity loan.
The board president encouraged public engagement in learning about the referendum, emphasizing the importance of attending informational sessions and asking questions. This sentiment was echoed by Mr. Coplin, who reminded board members to attend relevant presentations and ensure alignment with core rules.
Mr. Gallo highlighted the district’s referendum website as a valuable resource, urging community interaction with the information available there. He noted that much of this content would be reiterated during town meetings.
As the meeting progressed, the board expressed condolences to the Gallo family for a recent loss and conducted routine approvals of past meeting minutes. The board then addressed new business, specifically personnel matters, including the brief return of a retired teacher, Miss Cameer.
