- Meeting Overview:
The Mahwah School Board’s latest meeting focused on several issues, including the presentation of the 2024-2025 school year budget, recognition of district staff achievements and retirements, and public concerns regarding class sizes and gender identity policy. The budget discussion highlighted the allocation of funds for special education and employee benefits, with medical benefits for staff composing the largest portion of the employee benefits section. The meeting also acknowledged the service of retiring staff members, totaling 80 years of service, and celebrated the recognition of a National Merit Scholarship finalist from the class of 2024.
Delving into the budget presentation, the Board scrutinized the special education costs and employee benefits. The employee benefits section, which accounts for 14.3% of the total operating budget, is just under $11.5 million. Medical benefits for staff, provided through the state’s School Employees Health Benefits Plan, are a significant expense. The plan offers four different options, with varying premium increases. The district contributes to these plans alongside employee contributions. Prescription benefits through a private plan and dental benefits via Delta Dental were also discussed, the latter requiring no staff contribution.
The funding for out-of-district tuition costs was analyzed, noting the number of students attending tuition-based schools. The Board also considered other operational areas of the budget such as instructional support, school operations, district operations, maintenance, custodial, grounds, security, and extracurricular activities, each constituting different percentages of the total budget.
Recognizing the successes and transitions within the staff, the Board honored the athletic director for receiving a sectional award. New hires for the upcoming school year were announced, along with three retirements. Each retiring individual received messages for their dedication and service. In addition, the Board celebrated a student from the class of 2024 who achieved the status of National Merit Scholarship finalist.
The meeting also addressed public concerns. A member of the public raised issues with the school’s policy on gender identity and expression, particularly the communication gap with parents about children wanting to change their gender name and pronouns. This prompted a call for policy revision to foster open communication with parents. Another concern raised by a teacher and parent pertained to class sizes at George Washington Elementary School. The potential adverse effects of large class sizes on student learning and teacher morale were emphasized.
The transportation committee’s report on the waiver process for busing and the issuance of courtesy letters to families no longer eligible for busing next year was another topic of discussion. The round table talk, praised for its informal and constructive nature, was reported to have successfully facilitated dialogue on various subjects, including budget allocations and staff recognition.
A report from the Finance and Facilities committee introduced the delay of the HVAC project at GW but assured that air conditioning would be available despite the delay. Shared services with the Township on a paving project were also discussed. Additionally, the Board reviewed the status of the wireless lighting control system, the renewal of Pomptonian Food Services, and the MSF grants. The negotiations committee provided an update on ongoing discussions with employee groups and anticipated future agreements.
The instruction and curriculum committee shared insights on the New Jersey Department of Education’s monitoring of the child study team and the implementation of the learning management system named Aludo. Board member remarks included a mention of the Thunderbird partnership program, commendations for the high school and Ridge drama programs, and thanks to the organizers of the junior prom. A discussion on enhancing the civics curriculum in response to a proposal to allow 16-year-olds to participate in local elections was also part of the agenda.
