Mahwah School Board Discusses Facility Upgrades, Internship Success, and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Mahwah School Board meeting, pivotal discussions focused on facility upgrades, the success of the student internship program, and strategies to improve communication and engagement with the community.
Facility enhancements were a primary topic of discussion, with specific attention to the state of the district’s infrastructure. An update was provided on the completion of significant projects, including roofing at the high school and HVAC systems at the Joyce Kilmer School, with assurances that safety was maintained throughout the renovations. The district was also set to receive approximately $600,000 in state Rod Grant funding to support these improvements. Upcoming facility upgrades, including potential roofing and HVAC projects, were part of a larger plan, with a community referendum scheduled between January and March aimed at securing additional funding and support.
The board emphasized the importance of engaging the community in these discussions, with a state of the facility meeting planned for September 29th. This meeting aims to gather community input and foster dialogue on the condition and future of school facilities, separate from curriculum-related topics. The finance committee outlined the ongoing referendum process, stressing the need for board members to be well-versed in the talking points to effectively address public inquiries.
In addition to infrastructure, the board celebrated the success of the district’s internship and externship program. The superintendent’s report highlighted the program’s impressive growth, expanding from three initial placements to 60 this year, comprising 33 externships and 32 internships. Students gained valuable hands-on experience across various fields, such as healthcare, marketing, veterinary science, finance, and public health. The program’s positive feedback from students, parents, and participating companies underscores its role in preparing students for future career opportunities.
The board also tackled the challenge of improving communication and engagement with the community. Members acknowledged the district’s achievements, such as the internship program, often go unnoticed by the broader community. Suggestions were made to enhance communication strategies, including creating separate webpages for committees and potentially launching a newsletter to summarize committee activities. These efforts aim to increase transparency and celebrate the district’s successes, fostering a stronger connection with the community.
The importance of maintaining visibility and approachability at community events was noted as a means to strengthen community ties.
On the instructional front, the board discussed the introduction of a new K-5 math program set for implementation this year. A manual for a multi-tiered system of support was introduced to enhance instructional strategies at both elementary and secondary levels. Additionally, the board encouraged parents to participate in the proposed parent academy calendar, which aims to provide resources on topics such as college admissions and kindergarten readiness.
The meeting concluded with a reflection on board self-evaluation and the identification of strengths and areas for improvement. Members reiterated the importance of focusing on student needs and fostering healthy discussions. Enhancing the sharing of committee minutes and better communication with the public were suggested as areas for improvement.
