Mahwah School Board Faces Community Concerns Over Testing and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Mahwah School Board meeting, the board addressed concerns from parents about the amount of testing in schools, celebrated significant student achievements, and discussed the upcoming referendum and other community matters. The meeting featured a mix of community discourse, recognition of student successes, and logistical planning for future events.
The meeting took a critical turn when Robert Ferguson, a resident and the new liaison from the town council to the school board, voiced concerns regarding the educational environment at the middle school. Ferguson highlighted the excessive amount of testing his daughter and other students face, specifically mentioning the I-Ready testing platform. He noted that his sixth-grade daughter spends 20 minutes daily on this platform. Ferguson remarked, “it feels like more testing and less learning,” urging the board to reconsider current testing practices.
In response, a board member acknowledged Ferguson’s concerns, clarifying that the I-Ready platform’s intent is for benchmark testing three times a year, with weekly usage expected to be 20 to 30 minutes, not daily as Ferguson reported. The board member committed to investigating whether students are indeed being subjected to daily testing, which could lead to fatigue and disengagement. This acknowledgment highlighted a tension between data-driven educational approaches and the subjective experiences of students and parents. The board member also emphasized the value of the insights provided by the I-Ready platform while recognizing the need for a balanced approach that ensures meaningful educational experiences.
The meeting then shifted to celebrating several student achievements. The board noted the accomplishments of Mikey Brick, who reached a milestone of 10,000 points in basketball, and acknowledged the success of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Additionally, the indoor percussion group was praised for a third-place finish in a competition. Joyce Kilmer School received recognition for its heart health education program, Finn’s Mission, which has trained approximately 221 “lifesavers” in the community through hands-only CPR and stroke symptom recognition.
A notable highlight was the recognition of three National Merit Scholars from the class of 2026: Arouch Borer, Arnold Zang, and Nisha Vas. Their achievement marked a milestone for Mahwah High School, as it was the first time since the 1980s that three students from the same class received this honor.
The board also announced the retirement of two long-serving educators, Laura Lansman and Jen Aaronburgg. Lansman, with 24 years in special education, was recognized for her dedication and compassion, while Aaronburgg, with 30 years in education, was commended for her impact on students’ lives. Both educators plan to enjoy their retirements with family and travel.
Attention then turned to the upcoming referendum, with board members emphasizing the importance of community engagement and informed voting. The special election is scheduled for March 10th, and the board encouraged residents to educate themselves through available resources, including videos and FAQs on the board’s website. The board called for volunteers to assist on election day, highlighting the need for accurate information and community involvement.
The meeting also addressed logistical and safety matters, such as the Student Safety Data System report and the handling of winter storms by the Department of Public Works (DPW). The DPW received praise for its efficient response to storm-related challenges, and the board expressed gratitude for their efforts and those of the police.
In closing, the board discussed the potential rescheduling of the March meeting due to a budget submission deadline. However, with the state of New Jersey revising the deadline, the board decided to maintain the meeting on March 25th, allowing additional time for budget preparation.
