Malden High School Students Present Climate Education Initiative to City Council
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Malden City Council meeting, Malden High School students from the Youth Action Collaborative showcased their commitment to climate education and environmental activism. Their presentation centered on a gap in climate change education, with an emphasis on empowering youth through storytelling and hands-on activities. The council also addressed issues such as zoning amendments for data centers, budget approvals, and a legal complaint regarding an executive session.
The meeting’s primary focus was the students’ initiative to enhance climate literacy among younger generations. They noted an alarming statistic: nearly a quarter of U.S. middle school teachers offer no instruction on climate issues. To bridge this gap, the Love for Kids Club at Malden High combines storytelling with environmental science. The students announced plans for a flagship outdoor event in June, featuring themed book readings and a planting workshop for children. This initiative not only fosters direct engagement but also includes a petition advocating for a climate literacy bill in Massachusetts. The students urged council members to support their cause, providing a QR code for immediate action.
Council members responded positively, with some expressing appreciation for the students’ thoughtful approach and clear objectives. They highlighted the importance of broad support for the climate literacy bill and acknowledged the students’ potential to drive meaningful change. The council’s supportive remarks underscored the significance of local youth-led efforts in addressing global environmental challenges.
Following the students’ presentation, the council transitioned to discussions on zoning amendments for data centers. The council addressed Paper 276-26, which proposed changes to sections 12 and 32 of the city code to properly define data centers within zoning laws. In light of a recently passed moratorium on such facilities, it was deemed necessary to clarify definitions and collaborate with the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development. The motion to refer the matter to a joint committee and planning board passed unanimously.
The council also tackled budget approvals for three restricted segregated funds, which typically accompany the general fund budget. A motion was made to refer these budgets to the finance committee for further discussion.
Another agenda item was an open meeting law complaint submitted regarding an executive session held in May 2026. The assistant city solicitor requested permission to investigate the complaint, with a response deadline set for June 2026. The motion to refer the matter to the legal department passed swiftly.
Additionally, the council addressed marijuana retail licensing regulations, proposing amendments to ensure compliance with state law requirements. The recommendation was to ensure no fewer than five licenses were available, aligning with fluctuations in liquor licenses. This motion, too, passed without opposition.
The meeting also included discussions on the relocation of electrical equipment, initially planned for a different part of a property. Due to underground stormwater storage tanks, the equipment needed to be moved to a northern section. A motion to approve the petition with standard conditions, including landscaping and fencing plans, was passed.
Council members took the opportunity to acknowledge community events and initiatives, including the successful fifth annual Maplewood Fest, the upcoming PorchFest, and various Memorial Day activities.
