- Meeting Overview:
The Manchester School Board meeting covered various topics, including the termination of a long-standing meal contract with Lake Chris Elementary, recognition of student achievements, and discussions on safety and community involvement.
The most development was the announcement of the termination of the meal contract with Lake Chris Elementary for the 2024-2025 school year. Mr. Lorentzen explained that the elementary school had made modifications to their kitchen, allowing them to run their own meal program. This decision marks the end of a relationship spanning nearly 17 years. Lorentzen expressed gratitude for the collaboration and offered support for any future needs that Lake Chris Elementary might have.
Following this, student achievements were highlighted in a series of recognitions. Ryan Dunley, a senior at Manchester Township High School, was commended for his Eagle Scout project that contributed to the school’s outdoor classroom initiative. His dedication and community service were praised as a reflection of his upbringing.
Students from various schools were also recognized for their contributions and achievements. Shakir and Ael from Ridgeway Elementary School were acknowledged for their hard work and kindness. Elena, a fifth grader from Whiting School, was commended for her role in a school assembly focused on rules and responsibilities. Ariana from Regional Bas School was named September Student of the Month for her progress and support in the classroom. Jacob, an eighth grader involved in the drama club, was noted for his dedication to the arts.
High school students Mia Kuso, Xavier Samuels, Lane Cleveland, Eric Espanel, Larry Bus, Conor McKay, and Nikki Kisser were honored for their participation in a memorial event commemorating September 11, where they served as a color guard in cooperation with the Manchester Township Police Department. Their commitment and performance were praised by the board.
Senior athletes Madison Pastor and Dante Morite received recognition for their achievements in their respective sports. Madison was highlighted for her contributions to the girls’ soccer team, while Dante was praised for his leadership and performance in football. The board expressed pride in the students’ efforts and the supportive environment fostered by the staff and community members.
The meeting also included a report from a military ambassador, who thanked the board for their ongoing support of military students and their families, especially during the busy Permanent Change of Station (PCS) season. Jamie Poek, the senior class president at Manchester High School, provided an overview of upcoming school activities. These events included Club Rush, Fall Spirit Week, Back to School Night, the Homecoming game, and Freshman Class elections.
Public comments during the meeting brought up the donation of 144 T-shirts valued at $1,700 for the high school. Mr. Staples inquired about the purpose of the T-shirts, asking, “who are those T-shirts for, what’s on them, what’s the purpose of them, and why the donation?” Due to the lack of information regarding the donation, a board member suggested tabling the approval until further details could be gathered. The board agreed to withdraw the item from the agenda until more information was available.
Board members shared their experiences attending school events. One member recounted attending their first football game, describing the team’s performance as “exciting” and praising the teamwork and respect displayed by the players. They also appreciated the elementary school’s back-to-school night, which provided parents with thorough explanations of the programs.
The meeting transitioned to new business items, including contracts and personnel matters. There was a discussion regarding special services and the decision to send students out of district. One member questioned the timing of such decisions, emphasizing that it seemed early in the year. It was explained that one case involved a student transferring placements and another who was on home instruction the previous year.
During public comments, Mr. Staples expressed gratitude for the opening day initiative organized by the district, highlighting the emotional impact of a video featuring alumni sharing their experiences. He noted, “I’ve never felt the way that I felt like it was my first day,” praising the effort put into the program and its positive reception among staff. The board acknowledged the work put into the initiative, clarifying that while they considered making the video available to the public, permission from the contributors was necessary due to the personal nature of the content.
