Maplewood Tackles Rise in Burglaries and Traffic Violations
- Meeting Overview:
Maplewood Town Council’s recent meeting addressed a surge in nighttime burglaries, thefts, and traffic violations, alongside community concerns about dog-related issues and the recognition of police valor. Top on the agenda was the increase in thefts, particularly of high-end vehicles, and the council’s deliberation on measures to strengthen local security and engage with the community to prevent future incidents.
Perpetrators were exploiting unsecured doors and windows to access car keys. The council considered various preventative strategies, including the distribution of informational postcards and flyers to encourage residents to secure their belongings. In light of the thefts, which also encompassed shoplifting and package thefts, the council deliberated on supporting local businesses in fortifying their defenses against such criminal activities. It was noted that the presence of a police officer at a local Wawa store had already made a positive difference in deterring crime.
The council further discussed the concerns surrounding sexual assaults, particularly those associated with rideshare services. Discussions centered on enhancing the safety of young passengers, with the council expressing interest in maintaining an open dialogue with the community and businesses to collaboratively address these safety and security issues.
The meeting proceeded to address the employment status of security guards at Wawa and examined the stats on overtime within the 911 dispatch department. The chief highlighted the staffing deficit on weekends and the potential for increased overtime due to scheduling of Watch Commanders. The debate extended to the prospect of adopting the South Orange Rescue Squad as the EMS default for Maplewood, weighing the cost implications against response times and staffing.
Traffic violations were another point of discussion, with a focus on the problems caused by cars obstructing traffic lanes and parking illegally, particularly in handicap spaces. The council proposed targeted patrols to mitigate these violations and addressed the issue of double parking by delivery drivers, which was contributing to congestion in downtown Maplewood and Springfield Avenue.
Dog-related concerns in the community also received attention. The increase in dog bites and complaints about dogs being off-leash in parks led to talks about enforcing leash laws more strictly and the possible distribution of flyers promoting the use of designated dog parks. In response to hot weather conditions, the council touched on the importance of providing cooling stations and promoting awareness through social media.
The council took a moment to acknowledge the Maplewood Police Department’s recent award ceremony, where officers were celebrated for their bravery during various incidents, including rescues in Hurricane Ira. There was a suggestion to issue a press release to highlight these stories of valor and to contribute to a positive narrative surrounding law enforcement in the community.
