In public health discussions, the council underscored the significance of the county’s vaccine program for uninsured children, encouraging residents to utilize the New Jersey Get Covered program for health insurance. With a reported increase in influenza cases, council members urged vaccinations, particularly for vulnerable populations. Despite low turnout at the winter flu clinic, they advocated for residents to seek vaccinations at local pharmacies.

The council addressed community mental health resources by distinguishing between the 988 mental health crisis hotline and 911, promoting the correct use of these services. January was also designated as Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, steering residents towards resources like findtreatment.gov for support.

During the meeting, the issue of restaurant compliance with health regulations, such as prohibitions on plastic straws and utensils, was raised. A committee member expressed frustration over non-compliance and stressed the need for improved communication during inspections.

Discussions on early voting sites were also featured, with efforts to establish Maplewood as a voting location being highlighted.
