Maplewood Town Council Celebrates Women’s History Month with Proclamation and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Maplewood Town Council convened to honor Women’s History Month, unveiling a proclamation to highlight the contributions of women. The meeting also introduced two ordinances related to the township code and provided updates on health, community service events, and infrastructure projects.
The focal point of the Maplewood Town Council meeting was the proclamation for Women’s History Month. The mayor invited all elected women who have served the community to the podium for a collective photograph, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging their contributions. Assemblywoman Gard at Hall addressed the audience, providing a historical context of women’s contributions, particularly in education and leadership. She noted that women have often been unsung heroes, despite their roles in advocating for equity and inclusion.
The proclamation itself was a collaborative effort, with various officials reading passages that celebrated the diverse backgrounds of American women and their crucial involvement in labor, culture, and social movements. It highlighted the historical challenges women have faced, such as representation and rights, and recognized the first instance in history where both the mayors of Maplewood and South Orange are female. The proclamation also encouraged schools and community organizations to celebrate women’s achievements, aiming to inspire future generations and reaffirming a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
In addition to the proclamation, the council introduced Ordinance 3147 D25, amending Chapter 53 of the Township Code related to the Environmental Advisory Committee. This amendment proposes changes to the number of committee members, promotes diversity, and clarifies the election process for committee leadership. The ordinance was passed on its first reading, with publication and a hearing scheduled for March 18, 2025. The second ordinance, 3148 D25, seeks to amend Chapter 271 regarding zoning and development regulations, specifically addressing permitted and accessory uses in commercial and industrial zones. Like the first, this ordinance was also passed on its first reading.
The council meeting moved on to administrative reports, where updates were provided by the township attorney regarding recent legislation and litigation. The attorney mentioned that legislation extending the use of online newspapers for public notices had been approved, and noted several lawsuits filed by the New Jersey Builders Association against towns altering their affordable housing numbers—though Maplewood had not made such changes.
Health and community service updates were also a key part of the meeting. Miss Davenport provided a comprehensive nursing update, which included information on a reportable disease investigation, immunization audits, and a critical need for blood donations, with a blood drive scheduled for March 21. She also addressed the ongoing measles outbreak in New Jersey and emphasized the importance of vaccinations. Information on free vaccination programs and the revival of the Medical Reserve Corps was shared, seeking volunteers to assist during emergencies.
Deputy Mayor Herman reported on her visit to the JBY House, the Parker bike lane discussions, and a proposal to update Dart Field. She also highlighted community service needs, such as revisiting field facility and program rates, which haven’t been adjusted since 2010. The arts and culture segment celebrated Black History Month and noted upcoming events such as an egg hunt, a softball parade, and a health fair.
