Scheduled for July 19th, the event plans include engaging local businesses and permitting street alcohol consumption, mirroring previous Maplewood Village events. The council approved a motion to allow alcohol consumption during the event, contingent upon successful planning and stakeholder consultations.

The council also recognized the winners of the annual Public Service Announcement contest, aimed at educating youth about substance abuse, particularly vaping. First place went to Ava Ballentine, Lionus Herod, and Khloe Hazelton for their animated piece, “Harm the Environment.” The initiative, supported by the Maplewood Township and public health department, encouraged students to explore the environmental impacts of substance use. The council acknowledged the students’ efforts and urged the community to view the PSAs on the youth leadership program’s Instagram page.

Public health initiatives were another topic. The council discussed the Tobacco-Free New Jersey organization’s recognition of Maplewood’s smoke-free alfresco dining areas. Plans for a free summer meals program, available until August 14th, were also highlighted, alongside community food access efforts that served 48 households in the latest distribution session. The council outlined upcoming health services, including pediatric asthma screenings, a mobile health van, a vaccination clinic, and a webinar on extreme heat safety for children.

The discussion extended to the potential establishment of an immigration legal services fund, prompted by heightened ICE activity and recent Supreme Court decisions affecting local immigrants. Council members considered funding mechanisms, given the budget constraints, and explored public donations to support the initiative. The feasibility of such a fund under local finance rules was confirmed, with members expressing commitment to supporting immigrant families.

Senior community activities were also on the agenda, with plans detailed for various summer events, such as craft days, social gatherings, and a “Beat the Heat” series. The council emphasized assisting seniors with property tax relief applications.
