- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Margate City Council meeting, the council discussed updates on environmental and infrastructure projects poised to impact the community. The dredging program, essential for waterway maintenance and flood mitigation, was a focal point with updates on the citywide dredging permit and the Shelter Island salt marsh restoration project. A proposal from Stockton University to address comments from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on the salt marsh project was considered for approval. Additionally, progress was reported on the Winchester Avenue project, now ready for bidding following Department of Transportation approval, and the Adams Avenue storm sewer pump station, which aims to alleviate local flooding.
The engineering report also included updates on the 2023 Road Program nearing the end of its engineering phase, a flood warning and response plan, and the pursuit of potential funding for improvements at Library Park and the Pavilion. Furthermore, the council addressed compliance with new state regulations on stormwater management, with ordinance updates and fieldwork mapping to be completed by a state-mandated deadline.
In the public works department, a recent water main break was repaired, and an annual inspection for stormwater management yielded positive feedback from the inspector. The city’s sweepers will be undergoing maintenance and will not be operational for approximately a month. Public works also advised residents to winterize their homes, as there were multiple water shutoffs due to unprepared outside showers.
The council briefly touched on other departmental updates, including the planning board meeting schedule, police department retirements, and a successful trip organized by the recreation department for seniors to New York City. The recreation department is also overseeing the transformation of a field into a dedicated softball venue, a project currently delayed by weather conditions. The fire department highlighted the importance of winter safety, emphasizing the need for working carbon monoxide detectors and proper winterization of outdoor water connections.
