- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Margate City Council meeting, issues surrounding public safety and infrastructure took center stage, with the council addressing several important projects and initiatives. Chief among the discussions were the upcoming infrastructure improvements, including the fiscal year 2023 NJDOT reconstruction of Winchester Avenue and substantial grant-funded enhancements for Washington Avenue. Additionally, public safety concerns were highlighted, with the announcement of two new full-time police officers and a reminder about school zone traffic safety.
The City Council meeting detailed progress on various engineering projects, notably the authorization to bid for the reconstruction of Winchester Avenue, which is on the City Commission meeting agenda. This project is part of the fiscal year 2023 NJDOT initiatives. The Council also discussed the significant funding received for the Washington Avenue streetscape, with a $1.5 million award, and the Safe Streets to Transit program, which received $162,000 from the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Traffic safety was a focal point as the Council received updates on the Atlantic Avenue alternate traffic signal timing. Furthermore, the Council reviewed the flood warning response plan and stormwater mapping ordinance, with the latter requiring additional proposal due to the need for more extensive mapping than initially required.
Public safety matters were also prominent in the Council’s discussions. The police department is preparing to welcome two new officers, transitioning from part-time to full-time positions, which is part of a broader effort to backfill retirements and maintain a full staff heading into the summer season. Chief Hinson reminded residents to maintain low speeds, particularly around schools, to ensure the safety of children.
The Council also tackled the financial aspect of public services, with recommendations to increase fees for various licenses, including liquor licenses, to reflect current costs and align with neighboring communities. The proposed fee increases would be incremental, adhering to legal limitations, with the consumption license fee potentially rising from $600 to $720 and retail sales from $345 to $414, subject to a 20% per-year cap.
Other items discussed included the success of the ongoing zoning relief resolution for outdoor dining and displays, which has benefited businesses in the city since the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, updates were provided on the fiscal year 2022 NJDOT state aid reconstruction of Winchester Avenue, which is currently in construction with water and storm sewers installed.
