Marion County School Board Celebrates Academic Gains and Advocates for Student Success
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Marion County School Board meeting focused on significant academic achievements and enhanced educational programs, with discussions on student success indicators, upcoming school changes, and community involvement. The district’s impressive academic growth, particularly in biology and civics, was acknowledged, along with the impact of the AVID program on student readiness for college.
Highlighting the district’s academic progress, the board member noted the district’s grade of B, emphasizing improvements across various subjects. Biology scores surged from 53% proficiency in 2022 to 66% in 2024, outperforming state averages. Civics scores also rose by 10 points, doubling the state’s average, while U.S. history scores marked a continuous upward trend. The increase in advanced placement exam participation and pass rates, with 69% of students scoring three or higher, underscored the district’s dedication to fostering academic excellence. Despite these successes, the board acknowledged the need for ongoing improvement, with a focus on addressing disparities in student achievement and proficiency levels.
Slay attributed her leadership role as student government president to the AVID program, which she said left her feeling “20 steps ahead” of her peers. Leretti shared her journey from initial struggles to gaining tools and confidence for higher education, stating, “Before this program, I would have never considered college.” The program’s coordinator, Miss Emily Cook, emphasized the program’s goal, declaring, “Every student deserves a champion,” and thanked the board for its support.
In addition to academic achievements, the board approved several operational items. A change order related to construction management was approved, saving the district approximately $13,380.45 in sales tax. The board also approved a special data share agreement with Curriculum Associates LLC for a reading and math toolbox, costing $369,959.93, aimed at enhancing K-5 education. Furthermore, revised school start and stop times for Liberty Middle, Oyola Middle, and Horizon Academy were approved to better accommodate community needs.
Reverend Cummings addressed the importance of student safety and the need for caution during summer activities, expressing concern over recent student accidents. He highlighted the district’s dedication to improving perceptions and outcomes, stating, “We’re winning the battles because we’re in the trenches every day.” Cummings emphasized the critical role of community support and parental involvement in student success, urging parents to prioritize reading with their children and ensure consistent school attendance. He linked reading proficiency to improved classroom behavior, advocating for a better understanding of behavioral challenges’ root causes.
