Marion County School Board Celebrates Student Achievements Amid CTE Month Highlights
- Meeting Overview:
The Marion County School Board meeting on February 11, 2025, was a showcase of student achievements and the district’s commitment to Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The board recognized students for their outstanding performances in various competitions and projects, including a significant win by Belleview High School students in a NASA-sponsored initiative. The meeting also highlighted CTE Month, with students sharing their educational journeys and industry connections.
One of the most noteworthy events at the meeting was the recognition of Belleview High School students for their success in a large-scale competition involving ten Central Florida county schools. These students, guided by mentors from the University of Florida, secured first and second place in a project under the University of Central Florida’s NASA Group initiative. This grant-funded project aimed at minority universities involved research and education, culminating in the presentation of their work at the International Aerospace Engineering SciTech Forum. The students also participated in a STEM conference at the College of Central Florida, achieving first place once again. Their teacher, Mr. Delony, and principal, Heather Guest, were present to support them as they received accolades for their accomplishments. The board acknowledged the practical implications of the students’ work, especially in designing a smart grid system that enhances power distribution and emergency management in the community.
In addition to recognizing student achievements, the meeting focused on celebrating CTE Month. Kathy Audie, the CTE coordinator, introduced guest speakers who represented both the Southeastern Youth Fair and various CTE programs. The CTE programs in Marion County serve all middle and high schools, offering 39 career pathways and enrolling over 15,000 students. Emma Grace Duu, a sophomore from Deland High School and president of the Marion County FFA Federation, spoke about the Southeastern Youth Fair. She shared her personal journey, which began at age eight and evolved into a lasting passion for agriculture, emphasizing the fair’s educational value and its role as Florida’s largest youth event.
Following Duu’s presentation, Lindsay Snider, a senior from Belleview High School, discussed the culinary arts program, expressing gratitude for the opportunities provided by CTE facilities. Snider shared her aspirations to become a chef and highlighted how the program connected her with industry leaders through events like the Food and Wine Festival. She underscored the importance of mentorship and support from educators in realizing her career goals.
The meeting also included recognition of students who excelled in the district’s Launching Literacy secondary essay competition. Kylina Gonzalez, a seventh grader at North Marion Middle School, won the middle school category with an essay envisioning her future as a professional photographer. She expressed her commitment to personal growth and community service through her art. At the high school level, Caitlyn Lachlin from Lake Weir High School won with an essay on preparing for an evolving workforce influenced by technology and automation. Lachlin articulated the need for adaptability and soft skills, highlighting that many future jobs have not yet been created.
Community support for educational initiatives was another theme of the meeting, with donations acknowledged from various organizations. Notable contributions included funds for scholarships at Marion Technical College and support for school programs. These donations were instrumental in enhancing educational resources and opportunities for students across the district.
The board also addressed infrastructure and staffing issues. Discussions included change orders for construction projects and the approval of funding allocations for various schools. The board approved the relocation of transformers at Fort McCoy School to prevent overheating issues and the installation of new soffits at several schools to improve structural integrity. Additionally, the replacement of pneumatic tanks at multiple schools was mandated by the Department of Environmental Protection.
Staffing discussions highlighted concerns about the turnover among assistant principals, with board members expressing the need to minimize classroom disruptions, especially during the testing season. Superintendent recommendations aimed to ensure that every school would have adequate administrative support, prioritizing schools’ needs over central office staffing changes.
