Marion County School Board Discusses Homelessness and Names New High School
- Meeting Overview:
The Marion County School Board, in its recent meeting, focused on the challenges of student homelessness and the naming of a new high school. With approximately 1,600 students identified as homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act, the board acknowledged the logistical hurdles these students face and emphasized efforts to provide the necessary support. Meanwhile, a consensus was reached to name the new high school South Marion High School, with a final decision pending a vote in September.
The discussion on student homelessness was extensive. It was reported that nearly one in 40 students in the district meet the definition of homelessness, creating significant challenges for both the students and the district. Attorney Powers highlighted that many of these students face truancy issues, often stemming from difficulties in accessing transportation. The McKinney-Vento Act mandates immediate school enrollment for homeless students, regardless of missing documentation. The district’s Families in Transition program supports these students by providing school supplies, resources, and case management, contributing to a 96% graduation rate among homeless students.
The board also addressed the efforts of various community partners in supporting homeless families. Discussions included the complexities of living conditions for families residing in motels, often due to the inability to afford upfront housing costs. The re-certification process for homeless families occurs each September, which some members suggested could be updated to better align with the start of the school year.
Further emphasizing the importance of community collaboration, the board learned about the Continuum of Care’s (COC) role in coordinating resources for the homeless population. The COC’s efforts include data management and outreach. The board recognized the need for honest dialogue with working-class homeless individuals to better understand and address their needs.
Another topic was the naming of the new high school. Miss Melissa Kiner and Mr. McAteer, the principal, presented the results of a community-driven naming process. Through two surveys, the name “South Marion High School” emerged as the preferred choice, capturing 35.2% of the votes. Board members expressed varying opinions but ultimately reached a consensus to support the recommendation, noting the geographical relevance and distinctiveness of the name. The final vote is scheduled for September 9th, with plans to establish a mascot and school colors underway as the school prepares to open.
The meeting also delved into attendance issues, highlighting the slogan “Here today, ready for tomorrow” as part of an ongoing campaign to improve student attendance. The board discussed interventions and partnerships aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism and recognized three schools for significant improvements in attendance rates. The implementation of an attendance intervention suite (AIS) was introduced, designed to automate alerts and facilitate communication with families, thereby enabling personalized interventions.
Safety and mental health were further topics of concern. The board noted improvements in safety measures and the impact of comprehensive behavior training on reducing student referrals. However, they also acknowledged the need for ongoing support to address the mental health challenges faced by both students and staff. The “Handle Me With Care” program, which notifies schools of students experiencing trauma, was highlighted as an essential component of this support system.
Additionally, the board received updates on legislative changes affecting the student progression plan. The elimination of certificates of completion for students not passing necessary assessments was discussed, along with the implications for fifth-year seniors who would not generate funding. The board emphasized the need for clear communication with students and parents regarding these changes.
