Marion County School Board Highlights CTE Month and Approves $1 Million Tech Funding
- Meeting Overview:
The Marion County School Board meeting on February 10, 2026, featured notable discussions around Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and financial decisions. The board celebrated CTE Month, highlighting its impact on students, while also approving a substantial increase in funding for technological advancements within the district.
The meeting opened with a focus on Career and Technical Education, as Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer introduced Mrs. Kathy Audi, the coordinator of career and technical education. Audi emphasized the importance of CTE programs across Marion County’s middle and high schools, noting that over 15,000 students were enrolled in more than 35 pathways. She highlighted the addition of three new pathways at South Marion High School in the upcoming year and promoted the Southeastern Youth Fair, a key event associated with CTE. Audi’s presentation was followed by testimonials from students engaged in these programs.
Among the students was Megan Sanderpatty from Forest High School, who shared her experiences in the health science program. She described the program as a transformative force in her education. Sanderpatty stressed the program’s role in guiding students toward discovering their passions and preparing for future careers. Another student, Addison Torres of Belleview High School, recounted her journey in agriculture and her leadership roles within the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Torres invited attendees to the Southeastern Youth Fair.
Dr. Brewer recognized the students’ contributions and expressed gratitude for the leadership fostered through CTE programs. The meeting also included acknowledgments from the Ocala Marion County Association of Realtors, which had awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to various schools to support innovative classroom ideas. This community support was highlighted as crucial in fostering creativity and morale among educators.
In a financial decision, the board discussed and approved a $1 million increase for technology solutions. This funding will support various district-wide technological needs, including equipment for the new South Marion Senior High. There was discussion about funding sources for these expenditures, with confirmation that the money would primarily come from facilities dollars.
Another major agenda item was the approval of a $330,000 expenditure for a heavy truck and vacuum pumper body, replacing an older model. This decision followed a previous bid rejection due to non-compliance with specifications, with the current proposal ensuring a new vehicle with zero miles. The board emphasized transparency in the procurement process.
Security improvements at Ocala Middle School were also addressed, with the board approving a project costing approximately $1.76 million to add walls and doors, funded by sales tax revenue. These enhancements aim to improve both security and the learning environment. The board expressed appreciation for the community’s support in passing the sales tax, which made these improvements possible.
Additional topics included the approval of a change order for a remodel at Marion Technical College, an acknowledgment of community partnerships supporting public education, and updates on attendance boundary community meetings scheduled for later in February and early March. The board also discussed the importance of proper communication from school administration, urging community members to seek accurate information directly from schools or the district office.
The meeting featured updates on school achievements, including Forest High School’s cheer team performance at Nationals and district wins by North Marion High and Vanguard boys basketball teams. The board celebrated the success of three cadets from Forest ROC who received appointments to military academies.
