- Meeting Overview:
The Marlboro School Board meeting on September 3rd covered a range of topics, including the promotion of a culture of respect, addressing special education concerns, and updates on school facilities and fiscal achievements.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the integration of “pillars of respect”—citizenship, trustworthiness, responsibility, positivity, and kindness—into the district’s activities. The proposal aims to embed these values within school programs, staff development, and community interactions. Recognition events were suggested to celebrate individuals who embody these values. This initiative aligns with the district’s broader goals of fostering a safe and respectful school environment.
Professional development also came under the spotlight, with training on bullying, discrimination, and hate speech emphasized to deepen the understanding of prevention strategies among staff. The board agreed on the necessity of reviewing key policies to ensure continuous improvement in these areas and maintaining districtwide policy enforcement with clear accountability measures.
During the public comments section, a board member addressed a previous miscommunication regarding the inclusion of students with special needs, stemming from the August 20th meeting. The member clarified that their comments had been misrepresented by CPAC co-leaders, who had requested their removal from the special education committee. Emphasizing the need for all children to have opportunities for recognition, the member expressed disappointment at being accused of advocating against special needs children. They stated, “Using an advocacy group for personal attacks not only damages reputations but is also counterproductive to the very children we are all here to support.” Another board member acknowledged the concerns raised and clarified that the intent was not to attack but to address feelings of offense regarding the language used.
The conversation continued with differing viewpoints on the appropriateness of the public response to the initial comments. One board member asserted that it was inappropriate for parents to seek assistance through emails and be publicly called out for it, while another countered that the intent was not to ridicule but to clarify concerns. The latter board member expressed that, “it was just a misunderstood connotation,” highlighting the need for sensitivity in discussions about student recognition and achievement.
Regarding the district’s Extended School Year (ESY) program, a detailed report was presented, covering the period from July 1 to August 12, with 111 students participating. Activities included academic work alongside gym, music, and science, with highlights such as a visit from the Robertsville Fire Department and treats from Goldie’s Ice Cream Truck. The program also featured spirit days organized by CPEG for Disability Pride Month, promoting a sense of community. The board expressed gratitude for the efforts of Allison Mortar, who played a role in organizing the program.
The meeting also included updates on the opening of schools, which commenced successfully on September 3rd with a staff opening and Professional Day. Dr. MTZ noted the excellent condition of the buildings and the welcoming demeanor of front office staff, attributing their readiness to the efforts of the buildings and grounds staff.
An announcement was made regarding the district receiving a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for its fiscal year 2023 annual comprehensive financial report from the Association of School Business Officials. Gratitude was extended to Mr. Caravella for his leadership in maintaining transparency and high-quality financial reporting.
Facility updates were another key topic, with reports on recent upgrades, including new playground equipment, repairs to blacktop areas, and the completion of an auxiliary gym. Specific projects highlighted included the installation of accessibility paths and the ordering of a new generator for David Abbott School. An HVAC project for Marlboro Elementary School was also approved, with updates expected throughout the school year.
Personnel matters covered resignations, terminations, and employment of certificated staff, with resolutions approved without discussion. The board also addressed policy development, with second readings held and approved.
School updates from various institutions highlighted the excitement surrounding the new school year. Activities included PTO-sponsored events, open houses, and improvements in playground equipment. Marlboro Middle School reported on athletic programs and club registration, while Marlboro Memorial School plans for a transition assembly for sixth graders and upcoming virtual PTA meetings.
