Marlborough School Committee Celebrates Robotics Success and Expands Summer Programs
- Meeting Overview:
The Marlborough School Committee meeting celebrated the achievements of the district’s robotics team and discussed expansive plans for summer learning programs. Among the notable discussions were the impressive performance of the robotics team at the VEX Worlds Robotics Championship, advancements in music and athletics programs, and the introduction of comprehensive summer learning initiatives to prevent academic skill decline during the summer break.
The meeting kicked off with a presentation from Maggie Morsy, a junior representative of the Student Advisory Committee, who recounted her team’s experience at the VEX Worlds Robotics Championship. The Marlborough High School robotics team achieved a commendable 20th place out of 86 teams in their division. Morsy highlighted the months of preparation and teamwork that propelled them to the quarterfinals. The collaboration with an international team from Mexico during the elimination rounds was particularly emphasized as a highlight.
Following the robotics presentation, focus shifted to the district’s expansive summer learning initiatives. Dr. Defalco elaborated on the summer programs designed to maintain students’ academic momentum, addressing the potential for a “summer slide” in skills. The programs include a new summer learning website that organizes reading and math materials by grade level and incorporates engaging activities like a “Connect Four” challenge to keep students motivated. These summer assignments are intended to integrate into early English Language Arts (ELA) and math curriculums upon students’ return in September, with additional support available for those attending summer school.
In addition to academic enrichment, the committee discussed the expansion of the summer food program, supported by Project Bread, which will now provide free meals to children aged 0 to 18 at multiple locations, including public parks. This initiative aims to address food insecurity during the summer months and ensure all children have access to nutritious meals regardless of residency.
The meeting also included a detailed report on the district’s athletic programs, highlighting achievements from the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons. Notably, the boys’ volleyball team reached the Elite 8 of the MIAA Division 2 tournament for the second consecutive year, and the boys’ lacrosse team celebrated its first league championship with a record of 16-2. The unified sports program was praised for its positive impact and inclusivity, with over 25 participants engaging consistently throughout the year.
In music education, the district celebrated a student who received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, emphasizing the lasting relationships and leadership skills fostered through the music program. The music program’s success at various festivals, including the jazz ensemble earning medals at district events, underscored its excellence.
The meeting concluded with administrative updates, including ongoing transportation negotiations with NRT and the Teamsters Union, and the acceptance of various donations and subcommittee reports. The committee also acknowledged the graduating class of 2026 and expressed appreciation for the contributions of students and staff throughout the academic year.
