Marlborough School Committee Discusses Communication Overhaul Amidst Staffing and Student Leadership Updates
- Meeting Overview:
During the Marlborough School Committee meeting, substantial discussions unfolded about enhancing communication strategies across the district, filling critical staffing positions, and bolstering student leadership initiatives. A central topic was the district’s communication channels, which garnered attention. Concerns were voiced about discrepancies between the district’s website and mobile app, underscoring the necessity of consistent, accurate information. An individual highlighted the need for a dedicated person or team to oversee the district’s calendar and communication, noting, “if we can’t get the calendar straight then I don’t care what else is on the website,” stressing the role of reliable event information in community engagement.
The conversation also explored the proposed role of a newly updated District Communication Coordinator position, tasked with streamlining communication efforts and ensuring alignment across various platforms. The discussion extended to include the potential involvement of high school TV production students in content creation, which could simultaneously enhance educational experiences and provide valuable community content. Ideas for establishing standardized communication templates across schools were proposed to mitigate confusion arising from varied methods by different principals. The significance of having a dedicated communications person during crises was stressed, allowing school leaders to concentrate on management tasks.
In staffing matters, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services reported promising developments, particularly in filling Behavior Technician and Par Educator roles. A partnership with University instructors has effectively reduced vacancies, with only three of 51 Behavior Technician positions remaining unfilled. Additionally, impending transitions of temporary staff to full-time roles were noted, potentially reducing special education support vacancies to historic lows. Contractual adjustments for Behavior Technicians were also discussed, including a transition to a 214-day work year, with an opt-out option for current employees, facilitating staffing for summer programs.
Student leadership was another focal point, with an increase in participation noted, particularly in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) program, which now boasts 42 active members. The committee approved a motion for nine students and a chaperone to attend the BPA State Leadership Conference in March. Additionally, they supported the Marlborough High School Student Council’s request to attend the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils’ annual spring conference, emphasizing leadership training and networking opportunities for students.
A personal moment came when a retiring member reflected on their tenure, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve, notably mentioning, “I consider the day I walked into Kane School… one of the luckiest days of my life.” This acknowledgment highlighted the member’s longstanding commitment to the school community.
Furthermore, the committee addressed a letter of support for Hillside School to facilitate I-20 visa issuance for international students, recognizing the school’s longstanding state recognition. This move received unanimous support.
The committee also reviewed and approved various donations to the schools, including contributions from local businesses and organizations.
Subcommittee updates included discussions on policy reviews, the design plan for a potential new school building, and negotiations for forthcoming contracts with cafeteria staff and custodians. Community involvement was encouraged in the search for a new superintendent following the current superintendent’s announced retirement.
