The meeting commenced with Superintendent Murphy and Dr. Riley leading the session. The first order of business was the recognition of several students for their exceptional academic and leadership accomplishments. Adelaide Johnson, a member of the class of 2025, received the National School Development Council (NSDC) award for her academic growth and leadership. With a GPA of 4.75, she ranks fifth in her class among 253 students and excels in advanced courses such as AP Biology, AP Multivariable Calculus BC, and AP Physics. Her involvement in the varsity spring track and field team, coupled with district-level competition participation, underscores her dedication to both academics and athletics. Dr. Riley noted her empathy and service.

Dane Garson was also recognized as an NSDC award recipient for his outstanding performance in mathematics and science.

Sarah Garner, honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizenship Award, was noted for her academic excellence and leadership roles. With a GPA of 4.84, she ranks fourth in her class and exemplifies dedication to advocacy through her involvement in the student council and the regional student advisory council.

Leo Ren and Andy Zhang received the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents awards for academic excellence. Leo, with a GPA of 4.94, participates in track, cross country, and the robotics club, while engaging in internships with local organizations. Andy, who holds a GPA of 4.98, has achieved high scores on several advanced placement exams and takes on leadership roles in tennis and other organizations, contributing to his community.

Following the commendations, the committee shifted focus to district-wide initiatives and updates. Dr. Skaza, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, presented recently released district accountability data.

However, challenges remain, particularly in mathematics achievement, which increased slightly from 34% in 2021 to 41% in 2024. The committee acknowledged this area requires further attention, prompting discussions about refining instructional strategies. Concerns were also raised regarding English language proficiency scores for non-high school grades, which earned no points in either year.

The Director of Finance and Operations, Mr. Wells, provided insights into the Food Service program, highlighting consistent participation numbers and the reintroduction of popular fruits like kiwi, star fruit, and dragon fruit. Plans to expand the hydroponic stations across schools were also discussed, contingent on the success of the initial installation.

Transportation updates were shared, with Mr. Wells mentioning ongoing collaboration with NRT to update bus routes and a successful pre-bid meeting for transportation services.

In addressing breakfast participation at the high school, it was noted that numbers lag behind lunch participation. Efforts to increase breakfast intake include marketing strategies and grab-and-go stations. Despite these initiatives, the reasons for low participation remain unclear, prompting suggestions for more accessible options at school entrances.

Attendance and student achievement data from 2021 to 2024 were also presented, showing improved attendance rates and decreased chronic absenteeism due to district-wide efforts. However, the committee acknowledged challenges with the instructional model for English Learners (EL), noting concerns about students being pulled out of core curriculum too often.
