Marlborough School Committee Revises Strategic Plan Language to “Strengthen,” Approves Key Reorganizations
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting filled with discussions on strategic planning and administrative restructuring, the Marlborough School Committee took decisive steps to refine the language of their mission statement, opting to use “strengthen” instead of “change” to avoid negative connotations. Concurrently, the committee approved significant reorganization within the district’s education center.
The strategic plan’s language was the focal point of the meeting, provoking a debate over the implications of using the word “change” in the mission statement and the “Portrait of a Learner” document. This phrase was initially intended to inspire students to impact their communities and the world positively. However, concerns were raised that “change” might suggest current conditions were undesirable. In response, committee members expressed a preference for the term “strengthen,” which was perceived as more positive. One member articulated that “improve” could also carry a negative connotation. Following a roll call vote, the motion to use “strengthen” was approved unanimously, aligning the mission statement with a more affirming vision.
The meeting also addressed the district’s education center reorganization, prompted by upcoming personnel changes, including the departure of the assistant superintendent. The restructured model will introduce smaller, focused departments to streamline operations and align with the strategic goals identified in the strategic plan. The office of student services will be divided into three distinct departments, each headed by an executive director responsible for student management systems, special education, and clinical services. This reorganization aims to reduce departmental silos and foster collaboration, particularly on initiatives like improving student attendance.
Alongside these changes, the office of teaching and learning will report to a deputy superintendent, consolidating leadership while retaining the roles within the office of English language services. The offices of finance and operations and personnel will see title changes to clarify administrative roles. Importantly, the fiscal impact of these changes will be managed within the existing FY27 budget, with no additional costs anticipated.
The committee also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing food service director Pam Will, welcoming her successor, Matt Pari. Pari expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the strong foundation laid by Will, emphasizing the importance of nutritious meals for students.
Another topic was the review and approval of updated student handbooks for the 2026-2027 school year. While most changes involved calendar updates, the high school handbook saw more substantial revisions, including policy references and social media guidelines. Discussions highlighted the need for consistency in how policies are referenced within the handbooks.
The committee also evaluated the Superintendent’s performance, noting that most of his goals were exceeded, particularly in instructional leadership and management, while the student learning goal showed progress. The evaluation process culminated in a vote on the end-of-cycle summative evaluation report, which passed unanimously.
